I would give this movie an 8 out of 10. It's not perfect, but good for a very enjoyable movie night!

Is this a _fun_ movie? Yes.
Does the script make _sense_? Kind of… not really.
Do the visual effects _hold up_ in 2021? Not even close.
But the _premise_ is interesting enough that I can see how it became a television franchise. That'll be next on my watchlist.

It's a real trip seeing James Spader in this goofy role.

@dgw why haven't you seen this in 94? And why the hell haven't you seen SG1 at its original airing dates? so much wrong here

I can't watch this without thinking about James Spader as Robert California in The Office.

This is one of the best SCFI movies because this kick started off SG1,SGA and SGU and these together are the best SCFi series and it has so much difference to any thing else but they need to make an new star gate movie because they have given up because they killed SG1 by dragging it out to 10 seasons

Hey, this was some of the most fun I had at the movies when I was like 15. So I was devastated when it got Two Thumbs Down from Siskel & Ebert and one star from Ebert. Since I was a fan of that show.
One thing they couldn't get passed was Jaye Davidson who played a tranny in the Crying Game, as the villain Ra. I never really had too much of a problem with that casting though.
Hell, next to Independence Day. I would call Star Gate one of Roland Emmerich's best movies. He had plans for sequels but the tv series ruined those plans. Maybe then he would have been too busy to make a lot of his bad disaster movies.
The film can be goofy but my thumb has always been up. Due to fine work by Kurt Russel and James Spader, the musical score and pretty good visuals. I thought the show was okay but I would have liked to have seen the sequels.

I have read tons of negative reactions to this movie over the years, which left me expecting the worst of the worst. Honestly? I do not see why it's gotten such reactions, I didn't think it was that bad at all. I found it quite intriguing and actually kind of a fun watch, sure it's not a masterpiece but I have seen a lot worse movies than this one, it's probably one the most "overhated" movies I've ever seen. Hell I think I'd re-watch this over 2001: A Space Odyssey any day.

I don't understand how people watched this movie and thought: "this'll make a great TV show". This movie kind of sucks but I'm glad that it exists.
