It's an okay Superman movie. I've always found the fight between good and evil (trying to avoid spoilers here) pretty good.
If you liked the first two then you must also watch this one.
Do avoid the fourth movie "Quest for peace though!

There's two good things in this movie: Lana and Evil Superman.
Having Clark Kent fight Superman to regain control of his self was a brilliant creative decision. If only there were more like it...
They tried to Bond-ify the villains and it just doesn't work. How can a studio be so out of touch with what people expect from a Superman movie?

Director Richard Lester goes all out with the camp and the comedy in Superman III. A megalomaniacal tycoon partners up with a computer genesis and attempts to take out Superman in order to pursue his goal of world domination. The biggest strength and weakness of the film is its star Richard Pryor. While he has a lot of charisma and his comedy bits are funny, Pryor seems out of place in a Superman film and it sets the wrong tone. The plot is also particularly weak and is written poorly. Superman III is entertaining and fun, but the cartoonishness undercuts the material.

A trainwreck of epic proportions, with almost no connection whatsoever to the first two films. Superman has long had a cheesy side to him, it's no secret, but in trying to uber-emphasize that aspect of the character above all else, this stretches itself way, way too thin. If one were to remove the rich, interesting back-story from the first two films, cram every forced, campy slapstick pun into one long reel and inexplicably insert Richard Pryor at his mainstream worst, the final product would look startlingly similar to Superman III. The shameless Luthor stand-in's villainous plot is vacant and nonsensical, Lois Lane is written out after twelve lines, the Man of Steel himself is basically a supporting character, and both the central plot vehicle and the final battle are so far over the top they've lost sight of the Earth. The Superman-gone-bad scenes are good for a laugh, if just in a "wow, they actually filmed and released this" sense, but otherwise it's a catastrophic, toilet bowl stinker.

This one is weird. The story is too silly and there is no good villain.

Unwatchable. This was obviously an attempt to just slip one by the public by going super cheap on the special effects and script. It’s Superman. People will go and watch it for that alone. But fact of the matter is this looks like they went from a couple of million dollar budgets for Superman I and II to “can you make it happen for 20 bucks?” That’s exactly what it looks like.

In the key of comedy they are still making good movies in the series.

There is astonishingly little Superman in a movie called "Superman".

I remember when there was talk that Eddie Murphy wanted to be in Star Trek IV and the producers decided aginst it because it would distract from the movie. This movie proofs it was the right thing to do. I have nothing against Richard Pryor, I have seen many of his movies and liked them all. But he is out of place here. The whole movie is comedic just for the sake of having comedy. It serves no purpose. See, there is funny and than there is silly. And this is not funny.

Webster is no Luthor and althought Vaughn is more than a capable actor he can't save this mess of a script with this poorly written character.

There are two things in this movie I liked.
First, the part of evil Superman. That was an angle worth exploring and Reeve was phanstastic. And second, Lana Lang, who's instanly more likeable than Lois Lane (what's with all the "L" anyway?).
But it's too little to save an otherwise pretty mediocre to bad movie.

For a B-class parody, it could be. It is difficult to see this film any other way. So Pryor was trying to do well so +1 for him, and the Leaning Tower theme deserved +1 also.

Honestly don't think it's _that_ much of a step down from the first two. They weren't that great to begin with.
