Sweeney Todd marks Tim Burtons sixth collaboration with Johnny Depp and the fifth with partner Helena Bonham Carter.

Visually stunning, Sweeney Todd is a musical with the darkest of sensibilities; the squeamish take heed.

Depp's haunted Todd, filled with hatred and sorrow, won him several awards including a Golden Globe.

The film features solid support from Alan Rickman, Timothy Spall and Sasha Baron Cohen.

The musical numbers are evocative and often darkly humourous.

I've watched this film many times, and will many more. From set design to warddrobe, performance to the musical numbers, Sweeney Todd hits all the right marks for me. I have the soundtrack on my iPod and replicas of Todd's cutthroat razors on display in my theatre room.

There is nothing quite like it.

Was there ever a more perfect musical for Tim Burton to direct ? Not a frame of this film, could be mistaken for any other director. The initial animated opening is a great touch and there is a standout sequence involving Depp singing and killing his victims which is funny, haunting and horrific. Great production design and Depp & Bonham Carter are perfectly cast. The main flaw of the film lies with the plot involving Todd's daughter, which feels out of place in the context of the film and isn't really developed very well.

Horropera? Operorror? The sets are remarkable, the acting is above par and this is one of Tim Burton's best, but I still don't like musicals and this is yet another reason why not.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is a mixture of dark comedy, horror, and drama, done in the unique stylings of Tim Burton. The story is one of vengeance, after serving 15 years in prison Sweeney Todd returns to London to seek revenge on Judge Turpin, the man who wrongfully set him up in order to steal his wife. To tell this story Burton relies on his faithful regulars Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, along with Alan Rickman and Sacha Baron Cohen. And while all of the performances are quite excellent, it’s Depp’s brilliant performance that carries the film and makes Sweeney Todd both sympathetic and villainous. Musically, the film ranks as one of the best Broadway musicals to have been brought to screen; it has the depth and dimension of a big operatic score, yet it’s also light and comedic at times. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street seems a rather unlikely musical to translate to the screen...but translate it does, in a beautiful and stylish way unlike any other musical has.

Burton and Depp always bring crazy concepts to life and Sweeney Todd is right up there with the craziest of any of them. It is oddly dark with a rock solid musical score. While I am not the target audience for this, I really enjoyed it and it stands out compared to almost anything else I have watched musical wise.

Rating: 3/5 - 75% - Worth Watching

Seeing it the first time after 15 years really took its toll for me. I still liked the visual style and the songs but most of the characters didn't click with me anymore.

I had no idea this was a musical until I started watching, but enjoyed it regardless, despite not being big on musicals.

The fact that Depp, Bonham Carter, and Rickman could sing came as a surprise, even more so when their voices were tonally beautiful.

I’m not sure what was up with the fake blood though, the colour made it seem obviously so. Maybe this was the intended effect, to keep it in the realm of creepy rather than horror? Or to keep the theatric value?

I love a good musical. This one has it all - wonderful songs, engaging story, beautiful costumes. I love to listen to the soundrack every so often too.

Added bonus is Alan Rickman whose voice I greatly adore too - Clive Owen has a bit similar timbre but I never heard him sing anything.

I truly believe that Helena Bonham Carter does her best work when handed dark-grey characters to mess around with. The lead characters all have great chemistry.. Swing your razor wide!

I hate musicals with a passion but this- this doesn't count. It's one of my all time favourite movies and Johnny & Helena did an absolutely incredible job at once again being creepy and murderous. Definitely a must watch
