Another Woody Allen film that shows his huge love for Jazz music. Sweet and Lowdown is a comedy/drama passed during the 30's, in a documentary/biography style telling the life of the "famous" Jazz guitarist Emmett Ray.

Emmett Ray is a Jazz guitarist that entitles himself as "the greatest guitar player in the country" (after his great icon Django Reinhardt). A very selfish man with little adult attitudes claiming to be so irresponsible because he is an artist and "artists are like this anyway". The truth is that Emmett despite his enormous talent, due to his personality does not seem to get the career that he deserves, but he always has reasons for everything, or he was not "the best guitar player of the country." One day he meets Hattie, a mute girl who falls in love for him.

Sean Penn plays Emmett brilliantly! Despite being pretentious, narcissistic and sometimes a quite irritating posture, Sean Penn was able to make us feel a special affection for the character. Behind all that arrogant figure he is a more sensitive man than what appears. Hattie is an absolutely magnificent character and Samantha Morton plays her in a marvelous way! Despite the great performance of Sean Penn, the biggest star of this film is undoubtedly Samantha Morton. Each time I looked at her in the film I could only imagine that she had just come out of a silent movie, because the character is very similar, with the same type of performances of the early films of Cinema and I can not help mentioning figures such as The Tramp from Charlie Chaplin (for example that clumsy way of Hattie's walk) and Mary Pickford (in some facial expressions) come to mind several times. Two great characters coming out of Allen's mind.

The film manages to portray the era very well, through scenarios and clothing, not to mention the good soundtrack, or was not this film also about Jazz. The biggest problem of this film is perhaps its last half hour, it can not be as strong in terms of history, losing some efficiency and the interest that gives us until then.

Sweet and Lowdown is another very witty comedy, really in the Woody Allen style with scenes that will make you laugh and have a good time.
