Waaaaaay better than I expected. Slasher comedy fans wet dream. Roth nails the tone for this one expertly. Best kills I may have ever seen from an over the top standpoint. Perhaps 10-15 min shorter would have benefited pacing, but small gripe. Some silly choices here and there, but overall a solid 8.0. Happily surprised.

When the first panic scene involves
someone frantically trying to unlock a smartphone at their workplace when a regular telephone is literally in the shot
, you know you're in for a waste of time. I was misled by the IMDb score. Modern slashers are still 99% trash these days.

Holy fuck that line was so cold.

Thanksgiving is a horror film that has some really strong gory and killing scenes, mixing family drama with a holiday premise combined with over the top violence. It's basically Scream meats Home Alone, you have the basic killer out for revenge on a group of people with a shocking reveal of who the killer is at the end. The kills are creative and the jokes do land (sometimes).

Butttttttt.. no thanksgiving is without leftovers. You dont really look for a plot in these type of movies but I expected a little more, and the characters are repeated horror movie cliche stereotypes. You got the rebellious teen, cranky grandpa/ dad, the clueless step mom and the corny love triangle.

Do I recommend it? Nah. If you're looking for a brainless blast on the head with a holiday twist, sure you'll like it but it's nothing we haven't seen before. It all depends on your appetite for horror movies ;).

Very much promoted as the shlasher of christmas, well it had a lot of blood but not interesting killings or originals, based only on much blood and gore. You expect for a good slasher nowadays to have fun killings, we know we are going to be disgusted with the blood but maybe laugh from way they kill them.

About the killer well the actuall killer did not have the same anatomy or physique with the man with the mask among other monstrosities stupid things that there is no way he was the killer unless you skip time and place, so horrible job on that.

And when you stream live from the police station and people are actually searching for a killer why it takes hours to go to the police station ?

An entertaining movie that you knew would be pretty gory due to Eli Roth as director. Story wise it’s I Know What You Did Last Summer but with Thanksgiving pretty much.
Though despite Eli Roth as director, the movie is surprisingly well made. Though I can’t say I have seen many movies directed by him. I just know not many have been rated good.
Thanksgiving is none of that PG-13 watered down Horror from this day and age. It’s much closer to old school 80’s slasher.
Just note that you probably should never watch this before Thanksgiving dinner or any Turkey dinner. There’s one pretty gruesome, stomach turning and messed up dinner scene. As you’d expect if you saw the old spoof trailer.
The very end just holds the movie back a bit from greatness. Too Horror movie cliched and a little corny.

Me back in 2016: "Why didn't Eli Roth not make this into a movie instead of "Knock Knock" and "Green Inferno"?

I'll totally watch it."

Present day: Well, here we are.

I can't believe my wish came true, but is the film good? It's got flaws and some things could have been better, as the kill scenes could have had a bit more punch to them, as they just end and move on to the next scene.

But overall, I enjoyed it. I'm glad it's getting well-received by critics and audiences because if it wasn't, then this review would be me apologizing.

3 Thoughts After Watching ‘Thanksgiving’:

1. I don’t think I’ve ever rooted for a cast of survivors any less. Maybe that was the point. Maybe it’s because these characters just weren’t memorable whatsoever. Maybe it’s because he took time to feed the cat.

2. This very badly wanted to be the next _Scream_ / _I Know What You Did Last Summer_. So many parallels.

3. I’ll give it points for entertaining, over-the-top kills and a unique premise. Points off for a predictable killer reveal.

I watched this earlier today with my wife and we both really enjoyed it. The opening 15 minutes of the movie was an awesome way to get the ball rolling. The movie never overstayed it's welcome and I felt it had a solid pace throughout. Some of the deaths were better than what I've seen in other movies like Saw. Maybe I'm just slow but I actually didn't know who the killer was until it was revealed. They kept some things hidden or very misleading which was a nice change of pace. Usually, I have a very good idea who the killer is early on in movies like this but I never picked up on it in this one. Overall it was a lot of fun.

Like Thanksgiving dinner: serving up the same old stuff, but at least it's never boring.

The Black Friday riot that kicks off Thanksgiving was nearly as fun as the highway accident in Final Destination 2, but sadly the rest of the film was less original.

Still, when it's so easy to mess up good horror, I'm thankful they at least reheated something decent.

Surprisingly good.
Good characters especially the villain.
Decent story and premise.
For a horror movie this was fun, all the kills were horrific and bloody and no stupid offscreen kills like other horror movies lately.

Little Spoiler >
The only negative I have is around the 1hr mark the villain kills a random civilian during the thanksgiving parade. The public freaked out and were running around the villain in circles.
This movie nails the throwback, fun, gory slasher genre with love. It hits the rare balance of being over the top but not at the expense of the genre itself. It doesn’t feel like it’s making fun of itself, it’s just reveling in it. Eli Roth has said he has wanted to make this movie since he was 12 years old and it has that confidence of an idea that has been baked to near perfection (ZING)!

Also Hanover does fucking suck!

It's a good laugh.

Disappointed it wasn't Grindhoused up, and it doesn't have the original trailer's scenes play out the same way.
