When I first saw this film years ago it truly disturbed me. Over time it has lost that effect on me but it is still a chilling tale. The kind of film where you know not to trust anyone and even when the film is at its happiest there is always something dreadful about to happen.

I don't normally watch horror movies. For some reason, I decided to watch this one with my dad after seeing that Gary Farmer, one of his favorite actors, was in it. I didn't realize that he had less than a minute of onscreen time. This movie is pretty dumb. It's a poor man's version of The Last Wave (1977) and The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988) where the straight-man-scientist-type becomes a believer of the film's version of Santería after a number of child murderers. It's an incredibly slow, horror film with cheesy jump scares. Nothing memorable about this movie. The only remarkable acting in this film is done by Malick Bowens, who I don't think says anything in the film, but his body language and his face says everything.

I don't warm to spiritual type horror, especially stereotyped Caribbean religions. I liked the secret society aspect near the end but it was too late to develop it by then. No real horror after a while. The ending was supposed to be gripping but I thought it was stupid.
