Brilliant and shocking in equal measure, this movie hit me like a ton of bricks. It was anchored by a stellar cast: both the leads were incredible, and special shoutout to Karl Dane's unique performance as Slim. But more than that, it was King Vidor's direction--this felt like the most mature, modern silent film I've ever seen. The set pieces were extraordinary, in both small and large ways. Whether it was a 40-minute battle sequence that measures up to any war movie I've ever seen or a small scene involving two young lovers and a stick of gum: the direction here captured my heart throughout.

Recently in approaching the milestone of seeing my 5,000th film (at least by my IMDb list of my shoddy recollections), I wanted to make it a very special film, so it was between the blus of this and 'The Treasure of the Sierra Madre'.
