Fantastic piece of psychological horror of the beginning of cinema!
The atmosphere of the film is perfect and all of the things together, the shadows, the light, the painted scenarios, many objects distorced with irregular shapes, the make up, the acting, all helped to create a bizarre and creepy world.
It's incredible to see how things like this, with this great originality could be made in that era.

Watched this for a class on horror films. Really enjoyed the fantastic set design/backgrounds. The ultra stylized look is iconic and hard to forget. The actual story, while probably fairly unique at the time of release, is old hat now. Still highly enjoyable and worth at least one watch.

Absolute banger of a movie that fires on all cylinders from start to finish. Especially having watched the very dreary
Shutter Island
recently, this is an example of how to do the story right.

Paco Cinema 1: Picture 4/5 and mute. With the restoration looks great. Great expressionist film that I had not seen, backgrounds and scenery are very particular

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is a disturbing German expressionist film that still holds up. The story follows a mental patient who recounts the tale of a traveling showman who came to his town exhibiting a somnambulist (a person in a waking sleep) that he used to commit a series of murders. Despite being a silent film, the script does a good job at building the mystery of Caligari and his somnambulist, and at creating tension and suspense. Additionally, the sets, costumes, and makeup are all extraordinarily well-done and enhance the mood of the film. A true classic that has withstood the test of time, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari continues to offer terrifying thrills.

How do you review something that you were totally bored and underwhelmed with when you know that you risk taking the spears from the more refined film nerd?

I know that this film is almost 100 years old. It has a totally bizarre look that I think it receives almost all of its praise for. But it's hopelessly boring. And before I get hammered, I found two other films that are almost as old to be very entertaining. As a Horror film, "Nosferatu" is actually scary with a classic story. And although it's not Horror, Buster Keaton's "The General" is exciting, funny, and a five-star film in my opinion.

Times were certainly different when "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" was made. I feel like I have to excuse the fact that it's not that good so as to respect its age or rate it highly as other people have because it was arguably the first Horror film. But, something has to be first and just because this was doesn't make it less of a slog to get through after you've finished being impressed by its strange sets.

This is one of the oldest movies I've watched up to date, and now I have to get on older movies pronto because this was awesome!

I thought I would be bored out of my mind watching this, but I was hooked every second of it. The ending is chef’s kiss.

It is essential viewing for people that love crime/mystery/horror movies. It is perfect for a Halloween horror marathon for sure.

Don't miss out on this gem!

This is one of the essential films that set the foundation of horror! Great showcase of German expressionist style. The design and artwork is beautiful. This is classic for a reason. A must see for horror fans!
