Set in the final days of World War II, a deserting corporal finds a captain's uniform and so begins his descent into the insanity of war. _The Captain_ is satire of war where scenes of horror replace the jokes. Imagine _Dr. Strangelove_ without the humour but violence instead. The film resembles very closely the 'Captain' it portrays: strong, decisive, and arresting. The storyline is as unpredictable as the performances are striking. In addition to the stark storytelling, what catches you off guard about the film is how it is at once entertaining and thought provoking. An important film. Be sure to watch the end credits, which are as surreal and honest and true as any new story you'll see on tonight's TV news.

Holy bejesus, I was not expecting this movie to turn out how it did! I went into it having only read a short plex description and thought this sounds cool.. guy finds uniform.. others start following.. cool.. Then it just went so dark and twisted, my mouth was literally stuck wide open at what unfolded in the camp and afterwards. Then the movie unleashed the best end credits ever.. And then.. i learnt the freaking movie is based off a true story! What! See this movie!

Pretty amazing movie! A fantastic step by Schwentke to go back to his German roots and create this movie about parts of history which haven't be covered all that much. The black and white theme doesn't ruin the experience, I think it's a nice artistic addition to the mad story of Willi Herold. It all feels really authentic, only thing I kinda regret is the lack of great musical composition. Other than that, superb acting, great story and overall a really decent movie.
