Compared to "Pitch Black" this film features more Sci-Fi, better special effects and less horror elements. A worthy sequel and a very "cool", fast and fun watch.

The science-fiction/fantasy epic _The Chronicles of Riddick_ is an exciting and action-packed adventure. When the planet Helion Prime is threatened by a totalitarian race called the Necromongers, they seek help from an outlaw named Riddick to save them. Starring Vin Diesel, Karl Urban, Alexa Davalos, and Thandie Newton, the cast is quite good, and they deliver some impressive performances. The action scenes are also especially well-done, and bring a lot of energy to the film. However, the story is a little incoherent and fragmented due to some pacing and script problems. Still, _The Chronicles of Riddick_ is a thoroughly entertaining thriller.

Richard B. Riddick: You made three mistakes. First, you took the job. Second, you came light. A four man crew for me? Fucking insulting. But the worst mistake you made...

**There's a lot here to enjoy, and a lot here to confuse.**

The computer voice on Toombs' ship says it all...

It's a different type of mediocrity than Pitch Black. A bigger budget and more world expanding can't make this better than a dumb action movie.

This is a testament to "bigger is not always better". The original Riddick film PITCH BLACK was made for less than a quarter of the price and told a smaller more intimate tale. This film cost $US 105 million and told a world killer tale (complete with A list actors). The former brought in double the cost of making it and earned a loyal following. The latter made a modest (relatively) more than it cost to make and disappointed its original fan base. If this film had been a one off it would have been an OK film, but as a sequel it lost much of what was good about the first. I give this movie a 7 (good) out of 10, when the original was a 10 out of 10. [SciFi Action]

It may well have seemed logical to expand the universe for the sequel to Pitch Black, but unfortunately the film can't quite decide whether to commit to full blown sci-fi epic, given the increase in budget, or stick with the B-movie sensibility of the initial film. It doesn't help that the epic elements are muddled at best with some rather dull humourless villains (with only Thandie Newton seeming to have any sort of fun), an enigmatic Judi Dench whose motives are never fully explained and the usual tropes of prophecy and history that only serve to undermine the antiheroic nature of Riddick. Fortunately, while this story frames the film, the B-movie plot line is much more fun, with Riddick being chased by mercenaries and a trip to a prison planet that take up much of the running time. There is a strong much shorter film in here that would have worked well with Pitch Black. As it stands, it remains flawed but watchable.

When I watched it for the first time, I didn't really like it at all. But after subsequent viewings, it started to grow on me. Now I don't think it's too bad. Not as good as Pitch Black though. I think the problem was Chronicles was all over the place, story-wise, and it was kind of hard to follow. Which is why it took a number of viewings for me to finally get into it. Pitch Black, on the other hand, was simple and straight forward.

Haven't seen the third film yet, but it looks to be like Pitch Black but with a bugger budget.
