Initial reaction.

The good: Great opening, good concept, okay to superb acting.

The bad: Forgettable popcorn flick, bad delivery, overlooked plot holes, uncomfortable transitions between locations, terrible dialogue, crappy taping of a fantastic franchise to a mundane sci-fi horror, horrendous tension and character building, overall typical space movie that makes 'LIFE' look fantastic.

I was excited because I loved Cloverfield! But this cliche filled movie was just terrible.
Except from saying the word "Cloverfield" a few times, There is nothing "Cloverfield" about this movie.
Many unexplained plot lines... And ugh... Tam...
Everyone on the ship talks English, Tam understands English...
She must, Since they have long conversations and Schmidt doesn't translate it.
Seems like Tam refuses to talk English and speaks Chinese instead!
It annoyed me, because it just didn't make any sense.

@sopherian The Tam thing bugged me so much also. At first, I thought she didn't speak/understand English, but as the movie progressed, they made it very clear that English was fine for her. So, that made her character very arrogant for speaking Chinese-only when everyone else has settled on English.

@sopherian I would call that behavior pretty realistic. It's easier to talk in your native tongue, express your thoughts and feelings. Given that your conversation partner can understand that language, it can help using the language you're most confident in - even if it might be rude to other people nearby that doesn't speak that language. Emotions can easily be misunderstood when using other languages. I had conversations, where we both used a different language, knowing the other one can understand it. That makes talking much easier and more natural.

To me the conversations (not the dialogue, but the acting) felt really good.

@sopherian she could have just been awful at pronouncing English, and everyone obviously understood Chinese, so they all compromised.

Positive:
+ Good ideas
+ Clever setting
+ Nice effects and surprises (instant freeze!)
+ Gugu

Negative:
- Best scientists of the world are flabbergasted if confronted with basic science (magnetism!)
- Too predictable final third
- Humans

While I don't agree with the vehement hatred this movie has garnered online, I do think it is the weakest of the Cloverfield trilogy by quite a considerable margin. It's premise, story and acting are all fairly mediocre, but I do appreciate what they've done here with the Cloverfield formula. Without divulging too many spoilers, Cloverfield Paradox basically acts as a catalyst that will allow future Cloverfield movies to be as adventurous and spontaneous as they want, while offering a "catch-all" answer to the questions posed in it's predecessors.
While not fantastic, you can do much worse than TCP, and if you're a fan of the series it should be very high on your watchlist to catch up on where we are at in the Cloververse.
Here's hoping Overlord brings some much required innovation now the groundwork has been set.

I had such high expectations, but the movie just fell really flat. The main character (who's this tragic mother sort of character) can only do one thing throughout the whole film: stare wide-eyed, mouth open at everything taking place. All of the other characters are just stereotypes, really shallow, no personality at all. You have a Chinese girl who constantly speaks in Chinese for some reason while everyone else speaks in English; you have a Russian evil guy; an American captain hero; and the rest are just downright forgettable and not important. The plot taking place on Earth is really uninteresting, and they also have like a lot of subplots that are very overly-elaborate and, in the end, they just leave them hanging, leaving a lot of loose ends by the end of the film. Lastly, the acting is absolutely awful. None of the actors did a very good job and the dialogues sucked.

I don't get why people are complaining because the science in this movie is unrealistic. It's a fictional movie, not a documentary. Great movie, far better than 10 Cloverfield Lane, I can't wait for the next one.

The Cloverfield Paradox / God Particle / Cloverfield Station is as generic as a film in the space-station sci-fi sub-genre can be but throws some interesting ideas out there. The Earth scenes fell a little flat to me and it’s a shame that the space-station scenes weren’t executed a little bit better. The film does get better as it goes on, slowly escaping from the alien-like plot, and Chris O’Dowd really made it worthwhile for me.

The last scene was cool though I’ll give it that.

Once again, a case where idiotic reviewers dump on a movie that doesn't deserve it. What was soo bad about it? Was it just not what you were expecting? Did it just confuse you? I stayed away from this movie this whole time because of its reputation, but now I regret it. It's solid sci-fi, with real questions. Love the way it tied into the franchise too.
