I expected more purple. There wasn't enough purple.

I've heard people comparing this to the book, the original adaptation, and the stage musical, but pay them no mind. As someone who hasn't consumed any of them, this movie is fantastic. Every performance is phenomenal; I was so emotionally invested in these characters. Plus, the music was great (which it should be, since musicals live or die on their music). It's not an easy watch for a lot of the runtime; it delves into some heavy stuff, but the drama and tension are really good, and the character journeys are interesting.

It's a solid movie, and absolutely worth the watch.

Loved it! The acting, singing, dancing, music, cinematography- all of it was amazing even though the portrayal of tough characters and subjects. Glad I watched it.

Performances were vibrant and entertaining, but pacing was WAY off, and there were multiple tonal clashes with the music. With the exception of "Hell No," the music was the weakest element anyway. I know the whole point was to take the musical version from stage to screen, but if you take out the songs and shorten the runtime, with one or two minor pacing changes, this goes from a 5/10 to a 7/10 or higher. Sadly, the version we got is basic Oscars Swill

This year, I finally managed to actually watch all the Oscar-nominated films before the awards ceremony. The last one left was "The Color Purple," though it's not necessarily one of my highlights of the year. I have to mention that I don't know the Spielberg film and therefore went into this new version completely blind. But it didn't really click for me.

On the one hand, the musical numbers are strong, the actors are talented, and the direction is competent. However, the characters and story left me cold for quite some time. Only in the final act did the film manage to engage me emotionally. In the end, I'm still not sure whether the musical genre is really the right choice for this material. For me, at least, the songs frequently interrupted the immersion.

This was the final movie of 2023 for me, and a great way to close it out. I have not watched the original or the Broadway play, so I cannot compare it to those. I did not know what to expect going in, but I found the beginning and ending of the movie to be suffused with pathos. The middle kind of drags a bit and could have been shorter, and outside of 1-2 songs, I did not care much for the music. But the production and costume designs were lavish, and the acting was heartfelt. The themes are strong, which makes sense for something with so many adaptations already. It’s not necessarily one of the best movies of the year, but it’s in the second batch.

What a hot steaming mess.

This director has forgotten what subtlety is. The only way this movie could be LESS subtle is if there was a yellow and red flashing sign in the corner explaining every plot point's start, transition & ending.

The songs don’t fit the flow of the movie at all. Constantly feel like they're interrupting the movie. At least the songs themselves improve as the movie goes on.

The climax scenes towards the ends for various plots and story lines just feel empty. They actually pause for a crowd's reaction. Seriously! That's how egotistical the director was about these moments that were just falling flat.

Don’t watch it. Just re-watch the original.

Too much cheese, not unlike most modern musicals. Even the way the songs were produced sound too squeaky clean.
The cost-cutting for the Africa segment was funny. The previous film production actually went there.

And I don't get the hype for Fantasia's performance. She had the same sad eyed face for most of the movie. Whoopi was more three dimensional.

Not a musical fan at all but really enjoyed this and actually realized why some scenes happened in the other version. I did miss the "Mary what" and "the dead has a risen" parts.
