I dont think it'd be a stretch to call this one of the most relevant and brilliant films of the past 20 years. Heidecker delivers an amazing performance as Swanson, a man perhaps iconic of a generation, desensitized to everything through his own psychological defence of irony and indulgence. The film is neither satire nor, 'ironically', actually a comedy. It's an apocalyptic observation of a certain trend in our society, as we watch Swanson trying to desperately 'feel' something. The only solution comes in the form of the film's ending, which I won't spoil, but does give a small amount of closure. Alverson perfectly manages to capture the few remaining ounces of humanity in Swanson, and the frequent contrast of the characters against modernist American symbolism is a great touch.
