I can't believe that I had not heard of this film until recently. In case you have not, it was one of Copola's early films. It stars Gene Hackman and John Cazale. Actually, Cazale was the reason that I had heard of the film. He made only a handful of films before dying of cancer. These films include the first two Godfathers, The Deer Hunter and Dog Day Afternoon. The film starts innocently enough - a simple scene between two secret lovers. What unfolds as the film goes on is quite extraordinary and often unexpected. I can't recommend it enough.

A little slow. The whole concept of someone always listening is as relevant and scary as ever. Gene Hackman is really good.

As someone who doesn't typically watch movies from the 70's, I was intrigued by _The Conversation_. However, I must say that it didn't quite live up to the hype for me. While the film had its moments, overall it felt kind of boring and slow-moving. That being said, the ending was quite good and made up for some of the earlier stumbles in the plot.

To any one born after ‘99 this might as well be science fiction, from a archaic time when people cared about their privacy within the home. If you allow yourself to mentally go back to that time, a time before we made so much “progress” you’ll find this is a pretty decent movie.

That's a fair interpretation. A little generous perhaps.

I'd argue that the pseudo-sequel, Enemy of the State, would make that point better. It is at the crossover point where modern tech enabled such surveillance and then brought government & private interests to the surveillance apex.

As you say, now that ship has sailed and it is a given that all powerful entities know our every keystroke and utterance. And there was a time when they didn't and people fought to keep it that way...

A 70s icon that has aged badly. One that shows how far pacing in cinema has come and how a screenplay around technology can date.

The plot is interesting in the first act and the last act, very slow in the middle.

Gene Hackman is excellent - a modern performance in a dinosaur of a picture. And I subscribe to Enemy of the State being a pseudo-sequel.

@porteruk aged badly? This film is now more relevant than ever! Spying on people has never been so easy. Do you not read the news?

Also, pacing has not come far. Audiences have just gotten more impatient.

Snoozefest. Why a rerelease? It was boring enough the first time.
