Fans of The Horse Whisperer might want to steer clear of this quirky and darkly comic tale.

Kind of a chore to get through. Could have been a short film. Not really that funny either. Just annoying to listen to a bunch of southern accents say dumb shit.

I watched this movie expecting “a funnier Alabama version of Fargo”, from the comments.

For me, the situational comedy here was non-existent, the characters either boring or annoying (this is not a judgement on the actors: they were great), the dialogues plain and flavorless; I won’t comment on the story as apparently it’s a true one.

If it tries to be Fargo, it fails miserably. If it tries to be funny, it fails there too. If it tries to be dark, well it is just boring.

Great acting, great cinematography, but that’s about it.

Watchable, quirky, funny, farcical, dark humour. Comparisons with the Coens are inevitable but it doesn't quite manage to punch at their level.

A band practice night goes very wrong when 3 friends decide to drink and smoke too much. What follows is an attempt to cover crime and save face. The line between drama and comedy isn't really melded together that well (something the Coens do perfectly). But the performances are pretty good and it never feels long or a drag at any point.

I like that the title character is called Dick Long given the connotations. And the character Earl sounded just like Danny McBride in Eastbound and Down.

6.4/10

Outside of its clear shock value, I'm not sure how to feel about TDODL, the characters it portrays and its story. I'm not sure if the movie is going for heartfelt sympathy for these characters and their "acts", or comedic effect at their expense. The message isn't clear, and I was never quite certain if the film was trying to make me laugh or care.
That being said, the movie definitely has some funny moments, and is definitely worth seeing once for it's shocking subject matter, but I'm not sure I hold it to any higher esteem than that.

I guess it's more shocking to find out this was all based on true events. Highly recommend hitting Wikipedia during the
(Nickelback supported)
credits sequence.
