Based on a true story, this is definitely a low key non-action movie. It moves along slowly, but doesn't get bogged down. There's nothing outstanding, but nothing disappointing about it either. A good time waster with a nice story. 8/10

They added a completely unnecessary love drama involving homosexuality as a filler. Carey Mulligan and Ralph Fiennes are great.

This was a satisfying film to watch with a few game changing moments along the way. The characters don’t develop much but they work together well onscreen. 7/10.

For a movie that's very "dry", it sure is beautifully shot almost like a Terrence Malick movie, in terms of the floating camera movement.

Slow-paced yet compelling film about discovery of Sutton Hoo burial. A quiet world one wants to inhabit. I would watch again.

Trowel time. Yeah, I can see what Kermode means now. Aside from the relationship injected into the plot, I found the almost constant tinkling of piano very annoying in its search for sentimentality. The scene I did like was mother and son looking up at the heavens from the remnants of the ship, typifying Basil Brown's chief obsessions, and the voyage of the dead. Well filmed, if a little overwrought. Dialogue was also delivered contrapuntally many times, offset to increase the delivery of a feeling of reminiscence in the players. It was overdone and became jarring. It was not from one individual which you would expect if it was a perspective of someone later. There was a richer story lurking in the ground, and what was derived perhaps was too light and necessitated vocalised padding. I wonder if this was as a result of Covid dialogue redos. It required a smaller trowel, and not a shovel in places. Faultless acting though. It is possible I wanted to see the skills and drama of a Time Team dig combined with a delicate appreciation of the British countryside displayed in the Detectorists.

I’m not sure this movie knew what it wanted to be. The pace is sleepy, which in some movies is a good thing. In this movie there was just a lack of passion, conviction. The many possible explosive plot points never came or were dealt with using too much English measure. It was okay but nothing to write home about.

There are some good moments in this dry and stuffy drama but you have to dig deep to find them.

This is a wonderful story, exquisitely told. A wonderful cast giving fine performances. The whole production is understated which only lends to its tone and colour. Even the music is gracefully simple yet classic. I give this film an 8 (very good) out of 10. [Drama based on a real event]

The fact that this film is watchable and even on some level enjoyable is a testament to the perfectly understated performances of Fiennes and Mulligan. Think about it - the movie is about an archeological dig where there really is no "a-ha" moment.

I don't dig Ralph Fiennes' Suffolk accent too much. Pun intended.

It is called The Dig because they have to find a way to dig themselves out of all this sexual tension they have found themselves in

Definitely an enjoyable movie, more of a slow burn but was able to shine with amazing dialogue and cast. Based on the Sutton Hop excavation which I've heard about a lot from school but it was nice to see it portrayed on the big screen.
