[Göteborg FF '23] With a tone that seems to refer to the Hammer Productions films but closer to the refined style of "The innocents" (1961), Joanna Hogg focuses on the characters of Rosalind and Julie from her diptych "The souvenir" to develop a story about the mother-daughter connection surrounded by ghostly presences. But ghosts actually reveal absences, in a narrative that only uses suspense to rebuild memory. It is a minor film in this semi-autobiographical approach that the director has been making for years, but she elaborates a subtle look at the details that is supported by relevant references to Béla Bartók or Rudyard Kipling.

I enjoyed this movie a lot more than I expected to even thought I had figured out that she had been alone the whole time pretty early on. I liked that the plot took its time in unfolding itself, loved the gritty and grainy feel to the images, Tilda Swindon obviously never misses with their performances and obsessed with the leitmotif. Just a really beautiful film.

Loved the score, the cinematography and the creepy atmosphere. I just wish there was more meat to the story.

Julie (Tilda Swinton), her elderly mother Rosalind (Tilda Swinton) and their dog Louis (Tilda Swinton's real life dog) return to their former family home where family secrets come out. So yes, this is the Tilda Swinton cinematic universe.

**The Eternal Daughter** is an extremely slow gothic ghost story about the relationship between mother and daughter. The look of the hotel, the fog and the dull colors make it very atmospheric. It's beautifully shot and the story feels very personal. Tilda Swinton's dual performance is what makes this movie work she's capable of having complex emotional scenes between her two characters. The performance is very captivating but the movie is just sooo slow I was losing interest and had to rewind a couple times. The twist was totally worth it though and I didn't see it coming. It didn't quite reach the emotional heights I wished it would but it was almost there.
