The game is one of the most disappointing movies I have ever seen. It was very good for the first 110 minutes, and in the last 10 minutes it completely throws away whatever credibility it had for the entire movie. Suffice to say the ending completely ruined the film.

**Spoilers ahead**

They honestly expect you to believe that this guy is totally cool with being manipulated and deceived into believing he had murdered his brother. They expect you to believe that this guy would just be cool with believing they ruined his life and left him for dead. Fincher thinks the audience will just understand that this guy, who attempted suicide 5 minutes before, would just have a drink and move on. It somehow made sense to fincher that the guy would somehow jump off a building in the exact place the tarp was to hit it right on the x spot. Michael Douglas just accepts that these people forced him to murder and attempt suicide, and then just walk it off. "No no it's a prank bro, seriously bro it's a prank man it's a prank!" Most insulting ending I've ever seen.

@msheahan99 a popular theory is that he does die when he jumps off the building and everything after that is heightened and surreal as a result

@msheahan99 Excellent points.....but as in many (if not most) movies, it's best to not overthink it...if you do, it ruins a LOT of movies

Saw it when it came out and I found it to be a great film. Cast and filmed (cinematography) very well.

Many people find this to be a disappointment in Fincher’s skill after his amazing work on “Se7en” but I don’t think so. You can definitely see his style and way of telling a story. His choice of protagonist is bad - investment banker with $2000 shoes is not very relatable for most people.

And then the end is the real issue with everyone. I would point out that if you really found this out at the last 10 mins you really were t paying attention to the movie. So you know he was being pulled along as soon as he was knocked out. And after that you can see his catharsis as a person happen. The shooting of his only blood relative pushing him over the edge is very understandable. Falling through the glass and being taken care of as he is helped up is also very believable- come on this guy has had people take care of everything for him all his life. Him getting to see everyone in his life sitting there. And then his brother showing up alive is also understandable. He is a financial genius that is thinking lightening quick on most things.

The Game (1997)
2/2 story
2/2 acting
1/2 pacing
2/2 dialogue
1/1 directing, technical aspect
1/1 living up to its genre

OMG Mind Blowing Story and The End Result wat an amazing Plot.

Michael Douglas & Sean Penn Were awesome

It wasn't bad But at times it was slow pacing

Love The Dialogue it Automatically Drew me in

Definitely Love The Directing

Just strange and different. Not sure how one reviewer here said originality is lacking. There's not many movies like the Game. The end is disappointing yet likeable. Spoiler: Since a once boring stiff with not much to live for. Now expects excitement around every corner.

The David Fincher psychological thriller The Game is a brilliant and well-crafted film. The story follows an investment banker who takes part in an elite and elaborate game, but when it turns deadly he starts to suspect that it’s all been a con. The writing is especially good, weaving an intricate plot that constantly keeps the audience guessing as to what the game is. And, Michael Douglas gives an outstanding performance that helps to strength the material. Additionally, Fincher’s directing creates a rich, atmospheric mood that heightens the film’s themes. The Game is a smart and sophisticated thriller that’s a masterpiece of suspense.

I had really high expectations for this film from the ratings, however I found it to be boring and slow, lacking any originality.

Not a massive fan of Michael Douglas but never the less liked how I just never knew what to expect next, great concept overall but the ending was a bit of a let down and didn't really tie things together for me.

Holy shit that was fuckin idiotic. I won't ruin the movie for anyone who wants to waste their time with it, but the ending is one of the stupidest I've ever heard of. The entire plot was stupidly unrealistic, but that ending is something a 13 year old boy would come up with. It was so over the top, the twist couldn't have been more obvious.

1 / 2 directing & technical aspect
0 / 1 story
1 / 1 act I
.5 / 1 act II
0 / 1 act III
1 / 1 acting
.5 / 1 writing
0 / 1 originality
0 / 1 lasting ability to make you think

0 / 1 misc

4 / 10

The best thing about this is you are never sure what is real. David Fincher does a great job directing and setting the mood. Michael Douglas's descent into madness is fantastic and by the end he is going all out. I liked the ending but I can see why it wouldn't work for everyone.

"The Game" is a crazy head-scratcher. I think I liked it, but I'm just not sure what to make of it. For one thing, Michael Douglas absolutely owns the movie. It's pretty exciting and it's just about the only movie other than "Fast Times At Ridgemont High" that I'll watch Sean Penn in. The movie looks great, too.

The problem is the total suspension of disbelief that you must have to engage in this whole affair once the story starts rolling and bad stuff starts happening to Douglas's character. How could something like the game be arranged? Then there's that ending. It's not a satisfying one, and it is so ambiguous. I definitely could have missed something but I don't think it really has an ending.

Watch this for the performance of Douglas. His cool, confident demeanor is shaken down by the game and it's fun to see his elitist character deal with the breakup of his career and later his life.

Starts off really good. The story moved in the perfect pace, while also keeping you intrigued. But the ending takes a completely dissapointing turn. The acting and directing was good though.
