A welcome antidote to the flux of YA dystopian tales, this is a good film marred only by a sudden ending. The novel on which the film is based, was written before the likes of Divergent and Hunger Games and so the film can be forgiven of its similarities. This is concerned less with sci-fi action, however. Its focus is hope and a future after society has been neutralised thanks to decades of war and inhumanity.

Worth watching and its message is worth considering.

I just read the book so I decided to rewatch this. I like the movie better than the book. It has an outstanding cast and it was more hopeful.

No feelings were evoked until the end, and even when they were, it was no thanks to the characters what so ever. Everything just felt way too fast, yet somehow dragged on in a very predictable, lacklustre manner. There really was no depth put into any aspect of this film, when the plot was SO PROMISING! IT COULD'VE BEEN SO MUCH MORE?! I felt that nothing really happened, and nothing really connected...the entire film felt so void, the message (which is supposed to be so powerful!) barely felt present...

It was so good! Oh wow, it might have been even better than the book and I do not say this about many movies. It ACTUALLY might have been better than the book!

The giver was published as a book in 1993 (some live under a rock or in a cave) way before the Hunger Games or Divergent. Movie may lack difference because of the other dystopias made into screen before and execution in cinema feels a bit rushed. However, The Giver is not THAT bad. Definitely watchable.

Great movie, I had to watch a dystopian movie for school and chose this over the others, I think I made the right choice - Well at first I almost watched it in Russian so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

8/10 Great story! Would recommend

I find it interesting how most dystopian books and movies/series's have sacrifice - In this movie they showed sacrifice in the way that Jonas had the courage and bravery to go for it, to try and bring back all memories to the world. He risked his life so that they could know emotion, pain, love, and more.

I thoroughly enjoyed.

I had to either watch Hunger Games, Divergent or The giver - I chose this over the others, but I still have to watch the others but will do so at a later date (Might watch Divergent next week maybe)

Let me start by saying, I have never read the book.... but I believe I will now.
What a powerful movie! Very simple and yet the message is so wonderfully clear. I wish all of those trying to rewrite history or change the structure of today's society, would take the time to sit down, with an open mind, and view this.

I remember reading this book back in high school and never got around to the film due to poor reviews. Fast forward all of these years later and I think this was quite decent. It almost served as a SparkNotes version of how I remember the book and that was good enough for me. Is it as good as the book? Nope, but it’s not deserving of the super low scores.

Rating: 3/5 - 7.5/10 - Worth Watching

I like the concept - I just wish there was more. Movies like this always seem to end and leave it to the imagination but I would love to see what actually happened after that final scene.

@vivasuzi That's what you call an open end. The film did the same as the book. I can understand your feelings, but I would be appalled if the film had an ending that didn't match my imagination after reading the book.

@seri-e-sjunky I actually just learned this was a book as my daughter had to read it for school. We discussed the differences and she said the movie had even more detail than the book at the end. Overall I get it - book sounded good too.

A good way of teaching the kids about the dangers of Marxism. A film referencing the danger of denying the past and tearing down history. Give me the pain and suffering and competition and the colour (whether it's rainbow or black) of a capitalist society any day...at least under this system we have freedom to be whatever we want and be ruled by a+++holes with an agenda -whom leave us alone, rather than be ruled by a+++holes with an agenda, who interfere with our daily lives.... but at least, under the latter, we will all be equal in our nothingness. The things people give up for there safe space.

It's been a long time since I've read this book. In fact, it read back in elementary school and I don't remember much of anything about it, so I can't speak to the accuracy of it as compared to the book. But I watched with my daughter and she read drawn in. She was excited by the discoveries, devastated by the deaths and so invested in the ending. And watching it with her and her own range of emotions made the movies more exciting. I may not have liked it as much if I hadn't seen it with her but since I did, I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

I think this is actually the second time I’ve watched this movie ... it seemed vaguely familiar. Anyway, not totally recalling it I’ve given it 6 (fair). While the premise looks at another perspective of the dystopian based themes I’m not sure I buy it ... that they’d bestow such responsibilities on someone so young, especially someone so sheltered. I guess that’s on the author of the book though. I doubt that the response we saw would have been reality. I’d think there would be so much more fear. It was okay but could have been better if it wasn’t trying so hard to be a teen saves the world type movie.

Considering everything in our culture right now is so anti-capitalism, and anti-freedom, I’m surprised they made this movie in the first place. Anyways this movie is a great modern day story about the utopia that so many people desperately strive for, but will never work. It’s also kind of scary because you can definitely see a future in our near future that’s close to the society that this movie takes place in.
