It's a not that bad of a movie but it's kinda long. It's beautifully shot and has some good moments but it's lacks direction and a true meaning behind. Watchable for curiosity but not rewatchable for sure

Genuinely don’t understand the hate for this film. I thought it was pretty solid. I was moved. Great cinematography.

@hcolesmith95 but wwwhy? What was the point? Who were we supposed to care about or connect with. It may have possibly been a good book but I don’t really like to read. Really, what was good about this movie?

@jordanculp20 I mean if it's not your thing, it's not your thing! No biggie. To me, I was very connected to Theo--particularly as a child. It felt as though his struggle was that of being jostled around, of being swept under the rug and others taking advantage of him.
As for what was good about this movie, again it's all subjective so I'm clearly not going to make you like this film and that's okay by me. But I found a lot I enjoyed about the film beyond the obviously outstanding cinematography (duh, it's Deakins). I though Kidman gave a great performance, so did Wright. I myself keyed into the editing during the film and I thought it handed quite a lot of material pretty handily. There were quite a few dissolves that impressed me and generally speaking the eye trace was impressive. I thought the conceit of using jump cuts to bounce through space (much like memory does) pretty interesting to my eye.
As for what the point was, it felt to me like the film was just trying to tell us there's not sense striving for what has past because time is fleeting. It's a decently nihilistic message, but I thought it was nice. Particularly a fan of how it came together with the closing shot.

Again, if it's not your thing that's fine. But I liked it and I'm not sorry that I did!

This was a very good story but something about the filmmaking aspect was off. There were definitely some wonderful aspects about the film but there were other elements that just didn't work. Things I have a difficult time putting my finger on. At first, I thought some of the acting was dreadful which didn't make a whole lot of sense to me because I know these people can act. Plus, what seemed off about the acting was pretty consistent at times between several of the actors. That told me that it was probably the director who pushed them to act in a particular style that just didn't work. When the acting was bad, the scenes came off almost surreal which did nothing to enhance the story. Also, the music was dreadful. The soundtracks were good and very fitting but it was the score that I found very annoying. Almost like a ambient horror flick score, if you can imagine that. It ended up sounding cheesy. All in all, a real shame because I believe that this could have and should have been a good movie.

It’s not a bad film, but it’s not that great either. For me, it was a bit of a weird story and the fact it solely revolves around a painting. You’re not really given any clue as to its importance or why Theo has formed an attachment to it until the end and finding out why things have happened and even when you do, it’s quite underwhelming. It’s dragged out and it could be wrapped up a good 30-40 minutes before the run time. It just felt unnecessary. Not the worst I’ve ever seen but won’t be rushing to go and buy it or recommend anyone see it

_The Goldfinch_ is one of those movies posing as 'serious' by hiding the overall story from us and only doling out tiny drops truth from time to time thinking it'll keep us interested, and then, when it knows it's losing us, it introduces random characters that come with their own storyline baggage that never get fully unpacked.

Look, I realize I'm wrong about this movie because it's an intellectual film about art based on a Pulitzer prize winning novel, yet while I know I'm not as intelligent as this film, I also know I'm not as pretentious.

I am on the fence about this movie. It looks great, cinematography and sets are wonderful. The acting threw me off, but I assume it's due to questionable directing. The scenes drag causing the pace of the movie to be very off. The story itself could be more present from the start in order to build importance for the art piece. For most of the movie there is no explanation as to why Ansel's character is so attached to it. Could be much better, but it is not a bad movie.

I'm not familiar with the Pulitzer prize-winning novel the film is based on, and I know that the film has received criticism for failing to do it justice. However, the novel was deemed unfilmable, so while I don't know how they fully compare, I do think the director made a good film regardless of its origins. Admittedly, the last half an hour was a little muddled, and I'm still a bit confused as to what fully happened, but overall, I had a good time with this, and am now tempted to check out the novel.

Critics had soo much hate for this movie. I enjoyed it. I was captivated by the characters and their connections. I don't always like Jeffery Wright but really like him in this. Part seemed a little rushed but I don't want to sit here for 3 hours.

'The Goldfinch', an all-star cast with a decent director...yet somehow turned out to be such a huge disappointment.

Ansel Elgort was right when he said there was a lot good in this movie, but none of it connected with me. I didn't read the book so I only watched this as a movie, because there should be a difference when it comes to adaptation.

Other than that, the movie felt rushed in terms of character development and relationships, which is odd cause the run time is 2.5 hours long. Finn Wolfhard plays a Young Boris and Aneurin Barnard as the adult version. Both actors have Russian accents and will often slip in and out.

The cinematography by Roger Deakins is great, but it isn't his best work. Not bad, just not memorable.

This should have been a straight to Netflix movie.

I loved this movie. It moved me from beginning to end. The actors young and old were fantastic. Watching this movie has made me add the book on to to read list and it will be even better, with more depth and emotion. I can't wait. #TheGoldfinch

Genuinely enjoyed this movie though the father plot line was not needed. We knew he was a dick, we didn’t need proof. I much would have preferred a parallel Boris story to show their lives running into each other. That would have been much more interesting. Nicole Kidman was a waste, as was Owen Wilson.
