I thought the Grey was an underrated gem. It could've been a really cheesy man vs wolf movie and it has so much more depth than that. The message is a very interesting one and Liam Neeson gives one of the best performances of his career. Joe Carnahan should be directing a lot more because he's earned his stripes with this.

"The Grey" will probably not be what you are expecting. In fact, thinking this is going to be another Liam Neeson action flick in the style of "Taken" or "Unknown" would be way off the mark. This is actually a grueling survival movie. Once you get past Liam Neeson's character (named Ottway) putting a gun in his mouth and readying to pull the trigger, things get gloomy.

Ottway boards a plane which then crashes into the mountains of Alaska or Canada. He and six others survive, only to be attacked by some huge wolves. The survivors remain on the move throughout the rest of the film and their ranks are depleted with each passing scene. This is really a rather depressing story.

Everything is either white or grey. It's snowy and cold and there is no relief from the harsh elements. Neeson has absolutely no slick fighting moves to speak of and there are very few acts of heroism. It's very realistic and very hopeless. It's also very different and quite good.

Wow. What a cinematic, intense, brutal and great (at times heartfelt) film. I never thought I would say that about a creature feature but here we are. To call it a mere creature feature is an insult because I consider this one of Liam Neeson's best films and I love the ending.
