Way too long and not enough Jack Black. There is nothing special about this to make it a holiday tradition.

Required viewing in our home around Christmas.

The Holiday is no classic but manages to be a nice holiday comedy. Cameron Diaz is her usual ditzy self and Kate Winslet manages to be very good without any nudity (An accomplishment in itself). But the real star of this movie is Eli Wallach. You'll see what I mean when you watch this surprisingly good movie...

Rom Coms are very low on my watchlist. That doesn't stop me from watching one when someone I'm a fan of is in one. In this case Kate Winslet.
This one is as good or bad as they come. They go through the paces checking all the boxes along the way. And at the end, naturally, comes the happy-end. A feel-good-movie. It is way to long, though. Seems like you could make a movie out of either one of the plots and be better of focusing on one instead of both characters.
I do have a problem pictureing Jack Black as a love interest. Probably not the best casting choice. The best moment in the movie was when Arthur entered the theater, which is in itself an indicator when you have a movie about to women finding love and happiness when they really trying to escape it.
Ultimately not awful and I always enjoy watching Kate. Like I said, not really my genre.

Jude Law is the husband house wife we didn’t know we needed.

I enjoyed it better the second time I watched it (there was a 6-year gap in between). It shows different kinds of love and I always like a cozy English romance. [spoiler]However, there are no resolutions about long distance relationships. It’s not gonna work, guys! Believe me, I’ve tried! [/spoiler]

I don't normally watch romantic comedies and I watched this one only because it was included in the listening challenge for English language learners I participate in, and it was quite all right. I usually watch fantasy but this type of films are good to practise everyday expressions. I watched it in small parts over a week and I got used to the characters a bit. Amanda's story is definitely more romantic, though I liked Iris better as she is not so focused on romance but behaves more altruistically, helping the elderly film-maker Arthur, their friendship is great. Also, Iris's relationship with Miles is initially more friendship-based rather than a stormy love affair, and I consider it more "realistic" is some way. The disadvantages of the film are the fact that some of the characters (especially Amanda and Graham) kiss and have sex frequently, and even though the film is set during Christmas season, nobody ever goes to Mass, sings Christmas carols or mentions Christ.

Better than i thought and for sure less excessive than i expected.Nothing special but a fair-good movie. 6.8/10

I don't understand. Weren't there supposed to be any comedy in the romantic comedy? This focuses way too much on Cameron Diaz's story and not enough on Winslet's which is a better story. What a disappointment!

I remembered this as a better movie than I found it to be when I rewatched it. What may be my bias away from RomComs and towards RomDrams might have been the filter that lowered my rating. Romantic Comedies seem to root the comedy in hysterical hyperbole and the first 35 minutes of this movie is exactly that (I was not amused) but after those initial scenes there are some great moments of Romantic Drama (which I liked) that finds the core of it's comedy in people confronting the unexpected consequences of their life choices. Jude Law and Kate Winslet bring more rooted performances but I think the hyperbolic tone of the film was a directorial choice, so even they were pushed to the extremes. I also wondered if the roles were cast to highlight stereotypes of Yanks and Brits. Good acting smooths off the harsh angles of stereotypes by filling out the characters, which is what great performers do. Jack Black is always better than I expect him to be. Not a bad movie but more so a fair movie with nice moments. I give this film a 6.8 out of 10. [Holiday RomCom]

Minus the sketchy parts good movie.

I watched it like 9 times and it's one of my favourites. I still watch it every once in awhile.

The lighthearted romantic comedy, The Holiday is a fun and entertaining Christmas tale. Two women fed up with their romantic failures meet online and switch houses for two weeks in order to escape their problems for the Christmas season. Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, and Jack Black form a great cast that has good chemistry. The writing is a bit weak and obvious, but it still manages to have a certain charm to it and delivers all the tender moments that a romantic comedy is expected to. In a lot of ways The Holiday is just a stereotypical rom-com, but it uses the conventions well and is uplifting.

Promotion of dangerous behavior related to the real estate market... ;)

That was the weirdest intro to a (supposed) one-night stand I have ever seen. In fact, this movie had some insanely weird parts which I'm sure were meant as a joke but also seemed so sincere in a way? The British actors must have had a lot of fun with all the stereotypes. Pretty funny regardless and also actually semi-believable (except for the insane coincidences, of course).

It's been awhile since I last watched this film, lets say back in 2006.. yet again, such a beautiful film, better than first time around, and it feels like you're on holiday while watching it. Love is some times blind, and love can beautiful..it showed that in this lovely film.. Prob not has beautiful in reality thought.. ha P.S I loved the Dustin Hoffman cameo, cracks me up. ha

It's good but i don't really feel like it's a christmas movie

Girlfriend made me watch this because apparently it's a "classic" rom-com. Some parts of it are really good, but it's a lot of times too over the top, too forced. Some of the dialogue is really great. But it's probably 30 minutes too long.

This was a really warm and cute movie. It was nice seeing Jack Black as a normal human being instead of just a comedic goofball. In fact, I could go for a whole movie of just him and Kate Winslet together. I also like that there was no dark twisted secret, it was just a feel-good holiday film.
