I was so excited to this movie. After all, it stars one of my favorite actors (Richard Jenkins) and it was a play turned into a movie. As the movie started I was all set to dive into a talkie drama. As it started it seemed promising enough. And then... there was nothing to dive into. The allusions to some kind of sinister goings-on were extremely odd and - even after you see that they are metaphorical - didn't work at all. The last scene summed up the movie. It.... just..... kept.... going.... until.... it..... feels.... like.... the.... movie..... just..... (snore).

Because it’s about human nature. Skeletons in the closet, shame, guilt. The horror of the apartment is a metaphor for the darkness in the human souls.

An A24 movie, full of A24 "WE ARE A24!" clichés

this was superb a real surprise, really tense and edgy, made my shit itch at times but also often hilarious.

A clever adaptation in which the author / director uses the camera to construct a family drama like a ghost movie, the vision of these "intruders" from a distance, the structure of the dark and sinister apartment always in view. But the secrets are not behind the noises and moldy walls, but inside the family. Karam creates a kind of ironic ghost-story in which the truth, like the apartment, has two levels.

The characters and performances felt so authentic and nuanced that I forgot I was watching a film at times. That hasn't happened to me in a very long time. Absolutely breathtaking. Quite possibly the best film of the year.

Something about this family is so uninteresting and boring, I just couldn't get myself to finish it. And this is my third attempt as I keep falling asleep. Maybe one day.

Perhaps my fault was my expectations. I was interested in this movie due to it being A24 and the cast. The reviews were decent but the plot seemed to be something I would love. I was hoping for something like the gift, or the invitation were a simple plot builds suspense and keeps you waiting for something big to happen. Although this isn’t labeled as a horror movie or suspense I don’t feel it’s my fault for thinking they were trying that due to plenty of shots, dialogue and music. So does it ever build to anything? Kinda would be the answer stuff happens at the end that is kinda of entertaining but also dull at the same time knowing this is what u we’re waiting for. So is it worth the wait? Absolutely not this movie should be 40 minutes shorter and more concise if you are expecting what I was just go watch the gift or the invitation instead.

I watched this movie when it premiered at TIFF and I was completely blown away. You will find yourself completely engrossed with the characters and their stories. Outstanding performances from everyone and just top notch cinematography sealed the deal. A must watch. A24 has another gem in their portfolio!

Great cast, natural feeling story, intimate stakes...but when it was all over I wanted a bit more than "eesh, that was a bit too real..." Don't get me wrong, this is extremely well done and the nuance of all the performances is spectacular, but I didn't feel very moved beyond feeling sorry for this family and the difficulties they were individually, and collectively, working through. Perhaps this would have resonated more if I saw the play...who knows... I will say this is worth watching, but it might not feel as "deep" as some may hope.

Family get-togethers often begin well…until the cracks start to show. The film isn’t always gripping but it is incisive, and by the end, it’s actually quite terrifying
