The Iceman Cometh is a film I have seen many times before...just not in the last 20 years or so. The last copy I owned was a bootleg DVD with atrocious English subtitles. Now... I own two Blu-ray versions. One from Vinegar Syndrome and one from 88 films. The cut I watched today, was the Taiwanese cut from the 88 Films release.

To be honest, The Iceman Cometh is an old favourite, and even though the story is a bit uneven, and the mixing of a dark story and comedy might not be for everyone, I still really like it. Rather a lot, actually...

There's something about the clueless Yuen Biao and chain-smoking Maggie Cheung that really takes me back to times when Hong Kong movies were hard to come by, and what you usually got, when you managed to get a hold of one, was a copy of a copy with either a horrific English dub, or subtitles you couldn't make head or tails of. These new Blu-ray releases are really polished with some great extras, but the film still has the charm it had back then. If you are at all interested in Hong Kong action cinema, The Iceman Cometh is for you.
