I'm sure the intention was to make something profound. Unfortunately, what results is a ever so slightly unhinged collection of plot-points that never seem to meet up. The conclusion of the movie does nothing to place the things that happen before it in perspective, nor does it really conclude the movie. And I realise that a movie that opens with exposition about the hero's journey may be more powerful if the movie itself ignores that bit, but you tend to end up with something of a mixed bag of plots and conclusions to nothing much at all.
Kudo's though for not going the "He's doing it all to himself out of guilt" route.
I blame the director that he wanted to make this into a surreal and mystery art like movie instead of a simple thriller. A nice ambition, but bad news: It failed! Also the setting was quite lame too: Multiple calls from a telephone cell by Guy pearce threatining someone - yea wow, talk about variety... It just doesn't work. I'm not sure it tries that hard to work, to be honest. All around it feels like a weak effort.

An intriguing setup gives way to too many plot implausibilities. Ironic, considering the way Pearce's character inadvetartantly signposts the misguided third act earlier in the movie.
