Concentrating on Miyagi as this film does seems a good choice since he was the best thing about the first one and again he is here too. The change of setting is also welcome. But, unfortunately, this is a typical 80s sequel - way too repetitive of plot elements and ideas from the first film. The scenes between Daniel and Miyagi are really the only parts of the film that hold interest.

Betrays some of the story beats of the original and takes the easy way out of not having most of the cast return, by moving the location, but it's still entertaining, with a satisfying conclusion.

3 Thoughts After Re-Watching ‘The Karate Kid Part II’:

1. It’s definitely not a bad film, and I loved it as a kid, but there’s something missing after seeing it again today. Something that leaves it feeling a bit rushed in places and bogged down in others.

2. Despite its flaws, it’s great nostalgia. And it’s always a joy to see the friendship between Mr. Miyagi and Daniel grow even deeper. A pleasant continuation of their journey, with the entirely different _(and absolutely charming)_ backdrop of Japan.

3. Pat Morita is a treasure.

Chozen is too much of a jerk to sympathize for, unlike Johnny who some think Daniel bullied. While the movie is more cheesy than the first. It's still pretty decent.

A disappointment.

I gained nothing from 'The Karate Kid Part II', it adds very little to the original. Pat Morita (Mr. Miyagi) is the only plus point for me, he especially has one great and emotional scene with his co-star. Otherwise, no-one else stands out - not even (the still solid) Ralph Macchio (Daniel).

Up until the ending I was actually nonplussed about it, neither liking or disliking it, but the conclusion is so uninteresting and lame that I just couldn't wait for 'The End' to appear. I will say it isn't an excruciating watch or anything, but I just expected a great deal more from this sequel. It doesn't feel attached to the first film, which is obviously a negative.

Other things that didn't help were the shoehorning out of Elisabeth Shue (Ali) & Randee Heller (Lucille) and the repetitive nature of the story; e.g. another love story that features a jock-like character, Daniel still getting battered and bruised for the majority.

Hopefully the next two follow-ups are much better.

Without a doubt my favorite film in the entire franchise. Its often looked down upon as not as good as the original but I would like to make the argument that its on par with the original. Its a film that I think everyone who is a fan of the original should watch. It heartfelt, fun and memorable. Making for a unique experience if you give it a chance.

Whilst it's a welcome change to set this one in Okinawa, the writing is weak and repetitive. Most of the film is Sato's goons crapping on Daniel/Miyagi/the town. They have a beat to breathe then boom they're back. Very tiresome after a while. He's a very one note villain with no depth. I'm thankful they gave him a kind of turn around the end and that the message is maintained.
Even my love for Japanese culture wasn't enough to keep me engaged with this one.
