It's a cute little story and certainly my favorite silent Chaplin movie. The short runtime helps, because normally I fail to keep my attention for longer periods when there's no dialogue. The most impressive thing for me is, that this is more than 100 years old and is still fun to watch. It blows my mind just to think about it. I mean, even The Kid has been dead for 29 years and here I am, still watching this iconic little movie on the internet. That's amazing in itself.

The Kid, like all Chaplin films, has so much charm. Although this isn't my favorite Chaplin production, it's in the top 5.

Charlie Chaplin was a genius. It's probably a 9 to 10 for a silent movie but of course Charlie himself said it would never be the same with talkies. The little boy streaks the show but the angel dream scene was complete nonsense, thus the 7 rating.

The Kid may not be Chaplin's best, but it certainly is one of his most touching. It starts off with a little dark humour, where Chaplin thinks about putting the kid down a drain, but he decides not too and eventually takes the kid in and cares for him. Seeing how they make a living by smashing and repairing the windows was both hilarious and brilliant. A lot of the comedy as you would expect comes from Charlie and his slapstick antics but what makes this really emotional is the kid. Their bond was special and watching him get taken away was a really sad moment. Jackie Coogan played this off effortlessly. The ending was really sweet and emotional, and I just wish it went on for a little longer. If they had removed that unnecessary dream sequence and used that extra time for the ending, it could have been even better. The only complaints I really have is the whole dream sequence, and also I felt the music to be a little loud and distracting at times. In the end, it is a fascinating, hilarious and emotional time.

8/10

For a 100+ year old film, it’s aged remarkably well and is still very much watchable and enjoyable

"Awkward ass."

Charlie Chaplin was not only a master of chaotic slapstick but knew how to tug on the heartstrings.

i initially gave this a 9, given that it was really good but that it didn't live up to some of the epics of today.

i then went away, and a day later i was still thinking about this movie and how perfectly it had played out and mustered my emotions even without any spoken dialogue. given that i have upped my score to 10. a true masterpiece in storytelling even 100 years later

It’s ok but not as good as chaplin’s later masterpieces - Gold Rush, City Lights, Modern Times…
