Westerns are never any different just good or bad or even ugly and this one was good but too short. All cast were a good shoot out.

This is a bit of an odd film that comes in at the tail end of Billy the Kid's life and his friendship/feud with Sheriff Pat Garrett to tell the fictional story of how their lives intersected with an orphan boy named Rio, who witnessed the death of his mother at the hands of his father and the subsequent kidnapping and presumed rape of his sister by his uncle and cohorts. Rio thinks Billy is going to help him find his sister, but Billy seems to be too consumed with his own problems, and then he died, so Garrett winds up helping Rio find his sister. But I'm not sure trying to tell Rio's story and then weaving in the real life happenings of Billy and Pat works too well, and something felt off about the film. Dane DeHaan as Billy and Ethan Hawke as Garrett gave excellent performances. It's just that the premise felt a little disjointed and forced.

Film 128 (Goal: 300) of 2024:

I like this film enough. It's ultimately a forgettable retelling of the Billy the Kid legend and his ultimate demise at the hands of Pat Garrett. When it's moving it's a decent enough flick, but when it slows down, it really slows down. I quite enjoyed Dane DeHaan's performance as Billy the Kid. It's a shame he doesn't get to do a bit more in the script.

Written and directed by Vincent D’Onofrio, The Kid is an entertaining western that looks at the gray area between law and morality. After killing his abusive father, Rio and his sister go on the run and end up hiding out with Billy the Kid and his gang, who are being hunted by a group of lawmen lead by Sheriff Garrett. Featuring Ethan Hawke, Dane DeHaan, Chris Pratt, and Adam Baldwin, the cast is pretty good and delivers some engaging performances. Additionally, the film does an impressive job at exploring the ambiguity of good and evil. Still, the plot is a little thin and doesn’t go a lot into who Billy the Kid was. Yet despite a few weaknesses, The Kid is a compelling character drama.

I always loved western and the characters of Billy The Kid and Pat Garrett are featured prominently in the genre. But here they are not really the focal point.
"The Kid" is in fact a kid who was pushed into situations that could have made him another outlaw, much like Billy. No one is born that way. While he starts out the weaker of the sibblings, needing the protection of his sister, at the end he comes out stronger. It's a character journey.
Good movie in general and as a western. Not CGI infested but real photography. Really good acting and directing. Sadly, a dying breed of movies.

It's the story of Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid; competently told but not a western classic. Hawke and DeHaan are great in their respective roles, however.
