Shane Black can write movies like this in his sleep, and while this isn't his best work, it's a shame that it falls victim to such poor direction. This looks like it was made somewhat haphazardly, Scott's camerawork and editing are really not good (overexposed shots; out of focus shots; simple exchanged are overedited with way too many close-ups; Wayans is sometimes not lit properly; incomprehensible action), while his preference of sincere & bombastic music choices makes me question whether he actually understands the tongue-in-cheek tone of the script. Sometimes the film has a cool idea for an action scene (for example, there's a scene where Bruce Willis shoots a bunch of people who are on fire), but it's edited in such a way where I'm not allowed to appreciate it. For me, a lot of the appeal here comes down to the banter and chemistry between Willis and Wayans. Willis plays a slightly more hard edged John McClane, and Wayans does a good job at bouncing off his energy (even though he's clearly a weaker actor). It's really the characters and dialogue that make this movie somewhat watchable, but it's not enough to make it a good movie.
