Hard to believe this movie is already 17 years old. I liked it then and I like it now. It's timeless - it doesn't need to rely on any CGI/SFX. It tells a story. Granted, not one that is original, but you can tell a story more than once if it's told well.
You have two great actors facing up against each other althought I think Gandolfini overplayed it a bit. Doesn't matter in the end. All in all worth the two hours. I didn't even mind the pathos and patriotism dripping at the end.

@faction the golden ages. It gets worse since the early 200s. Now it's insane.

What a fantastic film! I was hooked from start to finish. Its filled with emotion, motivation and a fantastic story. The ending was heartbreaking though!! Robert Redford was fantastic.

The prison film had good days in Hollywood, and it proves it again here with this prison drama that criticizes the military power embodied by the sadistic colonel played by James Gandolfini. Shot in large part in the former state penitentiary of Tennessee, the film has a somewhat convenient scenario because there is a small impression of déjà vu, and can annoy by its patriotism often redundant (at the same time, it is very American), but he is very interested in the characters, the dramatic progression to the end is well done, and his great asset is the opposition between Gandolfini and Redford. A film without real surprise, but endearing

I'm sure the plot was fine. At points clever, And it was fun.....ny. Whenever movies are involved with hardcore patriotism it gets kinda hilarious. no offense, it's just how it is.

A decent movie. Too much patriotism always annoys me and plot holes hurt. Very enjoyable for anyone who has a US flag fetish.

A too long runtime and the few action scenes make this movie boring most of the time.

I agree with others; the patriotism on show here is nauseating... especially the end.
If you can ignore that it's not too bad; if a little predictable.

Gandolfini and Redford's performances are pretty great in this. While corruption should always be fought against, the plot feels a little weak but the teamwork of the inmates made it worthwhile.

A lot of folks here in the comments missed the point of the story. It wasn't about patriotism or nationalism.

They were saluting the sacrifice that gave each man the chance to have their dignity and safety.

Each person is their own castle of mind and spirit, and what legacy they leave. General Irwin realized he had given his life to the military, to the men under his command.
His last castle was was to stand for the safety and dignity of his men. For what was right.

At the end, that's why the flag is not flying upside down. The men and prison are no longer in distress. Irwin fulfilled his goal. The men have regained their sense of dignity and honor.
script isn't strong and isn't well written. main character doesn't do a very good job at acting,or his dialogues and directions given are bad. hard to get through past 20 mins.
