So, I could forgive the fact that this movie was rather cheesy, after all, it's The Little Mermaid and that's somewhat expected. The problem was, that the rest of the movie didn't make any sense at all. For this movie, the problem is in the details. In the fact that little things all along don't coincide or don't make sense. To start, it sticks a little closer to the original story, the mermaid gains her legs only to be rejected by the prince. Then she's cursed to remain trapped by the sorcerer until she finds love. And yet, when she does find love, it doesn't break the curse like it should have. Instead they still have to steal back her soul. When it comes time to rescue her, the entire rescue is based off the power of a fellow prisoner. If she had the power to escape all this time, why not do it before?? When they getting to the horrible "fight" scenes near the end, the former prisoners easily defeat their captors which again leads to the question of why they were trapped in the first place if they could have obviously defeated their captors at any time. It's hinted that the little girl has the heart of a mermaid and yet it's never explained exactly what that means or why it's important, and she's supposedly healed by "deep waters" even though they were clearly still in the shallows. There's even a moment when the mermaid is handing the girl back and she stands, literally stands and carries the girl, completely ignoring the fact that she supposedly has a tail now. And then there's some kind of "surprise" at the end because the two grandaughters gasp in surprise, and yet we see absolutely nothing. Overall, it ended up being extremely frustrating to watch which made it hard to enjoy.
