Pretty good movie which started brilliantly but unfortunately failed to deliver a convincing end.

Couldn't agree more. The VERY end was ok, but all in all the last 20 minutes really lost steam.

Fully agree. A very interesting concept but it did not execute well.

A beautiful commentary on society. Everything in this movie is binary. There's no bisexuality, no half shoe sizes. Relationships are built on top of superficial commonalities like a limp or a nosebleed. If it doesn't work out, get some children. Men and women are useless when they're alone. Men will choke to death while eating, women are getting raped. You might as well be an animal at that point.

To me the repetitiveness and monotony that spanned everything from camera work over score to dialogues was just a perfect way to underline the movie's message.

For the life of me I don't understand why this movie gets so many positive reviews. It made many critics' top ten lists for the year. And it is terrible. Just awful.

Yes, it is very different, weird, and creative... but that doesn't mean it's good or entertaining. Its a dystopian future that has absolutely no basis in any logic or coherence, the characters are totally unlikeable, and it's unnecessarily cruel.

Sometime I think people say they like weird, artsy movies just so they look like they get and appreciate artsy things, not because they actually enjoyed the movie.

Don't waste your time. One of the worst movies I have ever watched.

@gwarren1793 100% agree. I think the only people drawn to this movie feel like they have to convince themselves that it was brilliant to justify the 2 hrs they just wasted on complete crap. I was drawn to the dystopian themed future in the description, a society where everyone must find a mate within 45 days or be turned into an animal. Curiosity got the better of me; but come to find out its really a commentary about human relationships acted out by people who don't look, sound, or act human. I would like to say it was terrible acting, but there were veteran actors in starring roles. Fans of this movie like to believe this is a direct correlation to modern society and the way it sees relationships. I disagree. I think they just put the bunch of weirdos together (think the kids you remember from school who ate chalk and licked the doorknobs) in a hotel, figuring if they can get along and be happy, we will let them. If not, we turn them into animals. We will let the rest of society act like normal human beings, and these idiots can room together and practice some self control. If they can't, we will stick their hand in a toaster (best scene in the movie, John C. Reily!!).

@gwarren1793 it's comically absurd and enjoyable in that sense with an almost monty python British ridiculousness

Loved this movie, a very smart commentary on society and brilliant cast but I understand that it may not work for everyone.

A must see for all surrealists out there. It delivers a razor-sharp satire of our society. I just love such weird humour. Unique experience for sure.

"We dance alone. That's why we only play electronic music."

The Lobster takes place in a dystopian near future, single people, according to the laws of The City, are taken to The Hotel, where they are obliged to find a romantic partner in forty-five days or are transformed into beasts and sent off into The Woods.

The Lobster is a film that's both strange and completely bizarre, but rather brilliant as well. It's one of those movies that's so different with it's story and visuals that it's quite intriguing to watch. The cinematography was tremendous and the movie isn't predicable, as many times it takes a different turn for the best. Yorgos Lanthimos knows what he's doing and I can tell what he was going for when it came to the self aware moments. Every choice Lanthimos made in this movie when it came to the acting was done on purpose, as it fitted well in this unusual world that these people lived in. The movie isn't not for everyone (or just like every movie I like), but hey, everyone is different.

This sure is a weird movie, but in a good way. Yorgos Lanthimos has a very unique style. Colin Farrell really is one of the best actors working today and we need more John C. Reilly in everything. Also the score is very eerie and makes you feel uncomfortable, like you should be.
