The acting is really natural. It's funny to already see the constant calling attention to the camera in what is basically the 3rd or 5th found footage movie ever made. It _feels_ genuine and I'm sure in 1989, to a true believer, it did even more so. That being said as a movie it isn't great, the third act in particular. You have to remember that this wasn't really marketed as a "film" per se, but rather actual footage. Imagine being a teenager or college student who wants to believe, watching this late at night on your VCR, with nothing to compare it to. No Blair Witch, no Cloverfield, no Paranormal Activity.

I respect it for it's historical importance, but if you're a big found footage horror film buff (I'm not) this might not really be what you're used to.

My only real issue is the constant talking all at the same time. Now I fully understand that this is exactly what real life is like, but for the most part it took away any kind of attention I was paying to it and detracted from it. That said, for a film using found footage as an early example, it's actually not terrible.

Well, like someone said, the acting seems real for early on and natural but once they bring an alien in the house, things go downhill...

Didn't expect it to be so boring. Maybe I'll give it another try with the commentary track.

Interesting that this is probably the first example of a Found Footage movie. It has it's creepy moments but it's really difficult to see anything going on in the dark. The acting is very natural during the opening birthday party scene but after that, not so much. There's a point in the movie where an alien is brought into the house which defies all logic and really ruined any kind of threat from the alien invaders.
