Really poor storytelling, Clooney's part was so cliché, you knew exactly what will happen with him in the first moment.
The part with the spaceship could have been awesome, but sadly it fell really flat - first the acting was bad, and secondly the moment the accident happened everything went worse. I mean you want to tell me that there's no doctor on a spaceship, and there's only one person who knows how is a wound supposed to be handled? Because I'm not a doctor, but putting only pressure on it and think that will be enough is just stupid.
So all in all this was not a great movie, expected so much better than this, I'm disappointed.

Beautifully filmed, ponderously slow. There’s not much more to say than that, which is an indictment in itself.

@ben_hr Is it, though? Or is it more an indictment of the viewer? Films like this are not popcorn flicks doing everything they can to distract you for 2 hours. Instead this type of film accepts it's limited scope and limited distractions and allows the viewer to experience the story. And that is what this is, for better or for worse, an experience. Feel what the characters feel. Let the entire situation sink in. Reflect while you watch. The predictable nature frees you to let the story resonate with you. This is not about some twist on the story. You know the situation in the first minute. The rest is to feel how it plays out.

What an incredibly depressing and unsatisfying story.
What’s the point of bothering to go back to Jupiter? So you can give birth to some child destined to live and die alone with no hope to escape? Is this some artsy take on the futility of life?
One of the most depressing films I have ever seen in my entire life. I do not recommend this one to anyone emotionally struggling during the pandemic. Awful, awful ending.

@carlos-teran really good point. Seems totally tone deaf to release it now.

While beautiful to look at during most shots, The Midnight Sky turns out to be some of the most boring, formulaic storytelling I've seen this year. Nothing is new here, and everything is telegraphed before it happens. It drags it's heels almost 20 minutes too long, with nothing paying off from the time investment. If you need something to test out your new 4K TV, this isn't a bad showcase, just don't expect anything engaging narratively.

The greater plot lacks complexity and any form of exciting details.
So they used incredibly much screen time for pointless fillers, most them desperately trying to enrich the movie with emotions by action scenes. And every single one of them is a subpar snorefest.

The movie has some emotional moments and good chemistry between some actors.

But these few moments aren't enough to safe this trainwreck. This movie could have been cut down to 5 or 6 minutes and it would probably provide better entertainment.

I liked this. The acting was everything you would expect from Class A professionals. The story was moving. There were times when the pace was rather laboured but there was great beauty in the film that made the lulls worth it. I give this film a 7 (good) out of 10 [Near Future Drama]

I went in expecting it to be a disaster and was positively surprised, so maybe that's the key here.

It has a slow pacing, for sure, but by the end it fits the story perfectly, so people that just want to see action or explosions might want to sit this one out.

The one loose end that bothers me a little
was the one set at the beginning, for the deliberate misdirection. Not because of said misdirection but because it just feels wrong that they'd mention "the rest of the world" and then never bring up any more details about it like what happened in the first place to precipitate the expedition, how did it get so bad within the 2 years that the expedition took place or _what year is it?_

@dtsouza The movie takes place in february 2049. It says so at the very beginning. Also, Augustine says they "didn't do a good job" at taking care of the planet while the crew was away, so it's pretty easy to infer that climate change (and its precipitation) was the cause of Earth's destruction. That's why NASA sent Aether to explore K-23.

Interesting movie. Everything is very subtle, nothing is thrown in your face and pushed through your throat. No emotional rollercoaster crap. There's not that much going on but that does emphasise what it's about. There are very little or no distractions. Again, the point of the movie is emphasised because of that and I think it was a good choice to make the movie the way it's made.

It's a slow movie and I really enjoyed it a lot. I found the movie had a good balance between drama and scifi, yes both are equally respected imo. In fact the way I see it both are inseperable in this movie. Can recommend for when you want to have a chill ;-) movie to watch and obviously if you're into scifi.
