During the title sequence, I was glad I chose this; the music was perfectly creepy.
The story begins simply enough: a group of unrelated people seek refuge at an old, dark house, in the middle of nowhere, after car trouble. We get a mention of vampires, and there may be ghosts, but this gothic horror has neither. This is more of a mystery that plays out like a bad episode of Scooby Doo. The plot is nonexistent. Seriously, what was the motivation here?
I don't know how the ball could have been dropped so completely with the writing, when all else was great: the music, the acting, the lighting, the cinematography, the pacing was actually good. Okay, the editing, was garbage, but no big deal.
Aside from the atmosphere, and all other positives mentioned, this was pointless. Just sad. What happened? It's almost as if huge moments were cut out of the film, but the version I watched was the full runtime.
