I wanted to like this more than I did, but look. They’re just my dad. In good ways- the undeniable charisma and energy- and bad- everything else. The crowd loves them! They’re hitting their audience, and I’m not denying their skill and craft. And similarly, it serves a valuable purpose of immediately pre 9/11 America and its comedy. But so much of this is hating black women. Or doing an incredibly ableist and uncomfortable caricature of mentally disabled people. Or more innocuous but still plain tired and annoying ‘young people and their music today’ and ‘black people do this and white people do this.’ Am I betraying my people if I was thinking of the Simpsons joke the whole time? Is my white half winning out? It just does not hit today, I’m sorry.

As for Lee, it’s nice when he adds in a bit of his kinetic energy, circling the performers, and the off stage bits are endearing. I wish there was more of it, like when he interspliced bits of the audience at the beginning of the first set. He does a great job with the audience cuts, making them feel like part of the show and selling the kings among their people.

To sum it up, they were kings of their time, but all reigns end, and now like so many other reigns this endures as a historical curiosity.
