The book could have functioned as a base for an intense masterpiece about the horror of rural life and the burden of being different. But this movie sadly is uninspired in its pictures and arrangement of plot elements. Also the acting is very, very bad. No human being on earth would act like La Manuela in this movie, he/she is grotesque.
