The avenging angel of Marvel Comics fame comes brilliantly to life in this searing action-adventure thriller! Dolph Lundgren stars as Frank Castle, a veteran cop who loses his entire family to a mafia car bomb. His ex-partner believes Castle survived the blast and became the Punisher, living in the sewers and exacting vigilante violence against mob bosses throughout the city. When the populace is caught in the midst of a gang war that he caused, Castle must again emerge from the shadows and save the innocent.

The 2004 film was so much better. Dolph Lundgren looks bored and drunk in this movie and that alone just made it more hilarious to watch. This is one of those "it's so bad that it's kind of funny to watch". Not once did I feel bored while watching the movie, because the whole time I was laughing my ass off at the stupid shit in this movie.

I remember The Punisher as much better than it actually is, but this tends to happen when I take out some of the "lesser known" 80s action flicks I used to love. The Punisher is not a bad movie, but it very much a product of the 80s. Story and acting take a backseat to excessive violence, and few of the things that made the Punisher comics so good got into the screenplay. Typical early comic adaptation in other words. It does work to some extent though, as the Punisher is a rather violent guy in the comics as well. Despite this, I somewhat enjoyed seeing it again. Memories are powerful... Anyway...if you are after some mindless violence to spruce up your evening. Sure...give The Punisher a chance.

I remember liking this one a lot back in 1990 or so just as I was getting to recognize Dolph Lundgren movies. Almost works more as a goofball comedy mocking all those action films of the 1980's. Almost. Gossett comes off so much better than the material handed to him.
