A rule bound head butler's world of manners and decorum in the household he maintains is tested by the arrival of a housekeeper who falls in love with him in post-WWI Britain. The possibility of romance and his master's cultivation of ties with the Nazi cause challenge his carefully maintained veneer of servitude.

Hard to match the book, but it does well enough. Was disappointed with how significant moments from Ishiguro's novel were altered and/or excluded, but what is here is excellent. Great acting across the board especially - Anthony Hopkins does an amazing job as Mr. Stevens.

I felt the romance angle was undercooked. Nothing happens between them until the book scene, more than an hour into the movie. Having said that, all the other stuff around that is great.

This is by far my favorite Anthony Hopkins performance. Sure, the glittery performances are the ones that tend to resonate more (like his performance in Silence of the Lambs), but I think it is so hard to nail a character that requires a subtle and understated touch. The character says so little and so much at the same time. The movie may be a bit slow for some, but for those with patience the reward is amazing. I could have scene Hopkins and Thompson interact on a screen all day long. I also very much enjoyed the commentary on the differences between classes - I thought that was extremely well done. follow me at https://IHATEBadMovies.com or facebook IHATEBadMovies

**It is an excellent film, even if I disagree with the thesis on which it was made.**

In the period between the two world wars, the world tried to make sure that there was never again something as destructive and traumatic as the First World War. However, such decisions, very commendable but chim More

This is one of Anthony Hopkins' most nuanced and classy performances, depicting the last of a dying breed of upper servants in the stately home of "Lord Darlington" (James Fox). It's told by way of a retrospective as he takes some time off from his work as butler to American millionaire "Lewis" (Chr More
