Real people playing versions of themselves in a real story is what makes this art film stand out. A young and gifted rodeo star suffers a concussion and must face the reality of the situation with his hard drinking father and mentally challenged sister (who also play themselves in the film).

As haunting as a lone cowboy's ghost on a long ride down a trail that leads nowhere.

The amateurish acting is distracting and endearing. The landscapes are mundane and immense. The emotions are personal and universal. I left the cinema steeped in memories of moments I'd never lived, like carrying a tattered postcard from another life in the back pocket of my oldest pair of jeans.

A slow burn tale of broken dreams and hunting for purpose, The Rider utilises real people combined with strong cinematography to make a truly unique, authentic drama.

>"I believe God gives each of us a purpose. To the horse, it's to run across the prairie. For a cowboy, it's to ride."

This is a slow burn, but a good one. I highly recommend anyone watching this to look into how this film was made. A lot of it is based on the main actor’s real life (even the injury is real). Breaks my heart to see people lose the ability to do the one thing that makes them happy, and to be pressured by everyone to get back into it must make it even harder.

Broken dreams and broken hearts; a movie we can all relate to, even if we don't partake in Rodeo events for a living. A moving film, more so because the performers play themselves, or versions of their own personas.

This film might not be the best that I've ever seen. However it is absolutely among the most extraordinary that I have ever seen (there is a difference). About 20 minutes in I was thinking that maybe the movie would not live up to all of the hype. There is a point in the film not long after that where it all clicks in and I see where it is all going. At that point I fell in and trusted that I was in good hands.

What might be the most amazing part of this .... experience.... is that I can't imagine how the director found this story and knew enough to use non-actors to tell it. If she tries to make this with actors it ends up being an after-school movie. Amazing.

I'm Thrilled. Such an amazing and delicate direction to a relative simple screenplay. And a enviable and terrific work of Brady Jandreau on his FIRST movie.

It's cool seeing real life people act in their stories. This works way better than The 15:17 to Paris. Still I thought it was a little too slow.
