This is my first John Wayne and John Ford film and I'm a little underwhelmed. The movie is good but it wasn't great. I've heard this is the best western ever and I definitely think all the man with no name trilogy are better. It is beautiful to look at and the landscapes can be breathtaking. The acting is fine. John Wayne's character is kind of a dick. I did like Jeffrey Hunter. The story is ok, I wish the passage of time was a little more clear. Overall I liked it but didn't love it. Maybe after another watch later I will like it more and see what everyone else sees.

Some gorgeous cinematography, arguable some of the best. That mixed with the dark and mature themes of racism make this one of the best Duke movies I've ever seen.

For my money it’s the greatest movie ever made. You need to watch She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Red River, The Man That Shot Liberty Valance, The Quiet Man , Angel and The Bad Man , Stagecoach, Fort Apache, Rio Grande and then I think it will be your favorite movie to.

It makes zero sense that Marty has been tracking the Commanche for 5 years and never really learned how to fight.

I've been a 'wild west' fan and read many books on this genre. Also watched a bunch of movies. But no other movie could show me any better western setting than this one as I fantasized while reading books.

Loved the fight scene near the end, and the cinematography. Other than that, it was racist as hell. I am not talking about the main character. Indians were portrayed as plain villains. Like they always rape and kill people and our sweet white people are always the victim. I am white too, but it really irritated me.

After spending a decade of my life watching nothing but Italian westerns, these American westerns all seem pretty underwhelming. It's a fine film, looks nice, but greatest western ever made? Not by a long shot.

The movie I saw before "The Searchers" was "Monster Hunter". I considered that movie to be pretty boring, uninspired and with shockingly one-dimensional characters.

Then I saw The Searchers and everything was just as bad. Incredible that this was once considered a milestone. The only part that brought me some joy or entertainment was Vera Miles reading her letters.

A John Ford masterwork that's rich and spacious, just like the gorgeous western countryside that splashes every backdrop. John Wayne plays a flawed centerpiece, a grizzled former soldier with a chip on his shoulder and a strange, conflicted relationship with his extended family. As usual, cool confidence and raw masculinity seep from his pores and he takes hold of each scene with a pair of strong, old cowherder's hands.

This is a film that rewards an active imagination, as there's much going on between the lines that, without being spelled out, brands the cast with an unusual level of depth and detail. Unspoken histories flesh out most every character, allowing even generic walk-ons to mosey into the picture at most any moment and cast ripples throughout the entire tapestry.

It can be slow at times, and the casting of a very obviously non-native actor to lead the stereotypical enemy Comanche tribe doesn't sit well, but both such faults can be generally chalked up to the dated eccentricities of that era. Take the time to soak it all in, to look deeper than the superficial story, and you'll find a wealth of spoils.
