Good enough, if nothing standout.

'The Sorcerer’s Apprentice' is an interesting film. The premise isn't anything revolutionary, it follows the same beats that a load of these sorta films do; I recall 'Bulletproof Monk' and 'Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief' having similar-ish set-ups.

That's not to say it isn't enjoyable, as I did like it. Nicolas Cage always manages to entertain one way or another, while Jay Baruchel works well for the comedic stuff in particular. Alfred Molina makes another live-action Disney appearance, following on from 'Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time' two months prior. He's solid, but better in the latter.

The special effects are excellent, I really enjoyed seeing it all come to life onscreen. The score is decent, though the pacing could've been finer. Overall, it's a film I just about feel satisfied with. Worth a watch? Sure.

I have to admit I was surprised. The delivery of the back story was painful, but once we got to the 21st Century, it was much better.

One of his last good movies before he just took anything he could get...

The apprentice's character is annoying.

6.5/10 - This was maximum cringe... :o :D I remember this as a 7/10 or even 8/10 but I cannot really rate it more than 6/10 now. It's kinda fun but it's also way too cringe and the acting or rather characters are too weird... I also wonder if I'd like the German version more as the dialogue/lines are better in my memory. The voices of Balthazar and Dave also somehow didn't really get me in the OV.

I really like the combination of magic and science though. There weren't many technical details but the importance of science was clear and Tesla coils are cool!

The end credits scene seems to leave room for a second part but a proper remake might be better.

Two words, Nicolas and Cage and exactly in that order.

A dreadful backstory that makes you think the entire movie has a £5 budget and no actors who took acting lessons, but if you sit through the first 5 minutes it is a good enough movie.

I wish this came out when I was a kid, because I know I would've loved it. Magic, cool vfx, humor... right up my alley. Watching it as an adult was not near as fun, but I appreciate what they were trying to do and this was right before Nicolas Cage started doing insane roles (this might've been the beginning of all of that).

All in all a good time for the family.

if you like Nicholas Cage, this movie is above-average (slightly).
if you don't like Nicholas Cage, move on to something else.

that being said, I have been wondering, to avoid the appearance of nepotism as Francis Ford Coppola's nephew, he changed his name. however, Nicholas Cage has been playing the same character, in essentially the same movie, since the dawn of his career. just the slightest whiff of nepotism, in a city and industry where nepotism is about as common as silicone and peroxide, and he legally changes his name. but playing the same character for more than 20 years is ok. that doesn't fit.

don't get me wrong, I like the character. and Cage is in good company. Harrison Ford and Al Pacino come to mind.

but still, it just doesn't make sense. or maybe I have too much time on my hands...

Holy smokes. Started watching this with my little boy expecting some Harry potter style guff instead got a kick ass action movie with fair tale elements. Enjoyable for the whole family, especially the dads I expect.

Weak story, but has good effects and Monica Bellucci. What else could you ask for?
