The idea of a child beeing born on Mars sounded intriguing. So the movie starts interesting but quickly turns into a generic love story with a predictable plot and a forseeable ending. That needn´t be a bad thing but what didn´t make this work for me is the whole setup.
The story supposedly takes place in 2034 and it doesn´t show. People are driving decade old cars for instance. And it seems to be pretty easy to just steal cars everywhere and drive around in them from state to state without beeing spotted althought they seem to have pretty good sattelite surveillance. I know that´s not the point of the story but you could have told it pretty much in any time period one way or the other. If the SciFi part doesn´t add anything to it beside the distance why use it at all?
That all aside technically this is a nice movie. But, as I said, for me that is like getting an empty present.

Not that this isn't a really cute movie, because it is, a real coming of age crossed with ET sort of premise but
I was immediately taken out of the movie by the fact that people are texting and communicating between Mars and Earth and there isn't a 15 minute delay. This is 2019 and everyone even kids today understand how this works. Also this team brought back a child born on Mars and this isn't the biggest news in the world? It took multiple countries to come together to get the ISS going; I sincerely doubt that by 2034 there will be a superpower with enough infrastructure to send people to Mars and keep any secrets from other countries. I mean by then either we'll be working together as a planet or we will have had WW3. So there are some real science foul ups which, like the old cars you pointed out, probably belong somewhere in 90's cinema
but all in a all a solid enough teeny movie in the background while I was washing the dishes.

@toastedzen I think teeny movie describes this very well. More romance than scifi. But like you said, even kids understand the basics of science today. I can understand some crossing corners for the sake off moving the plot along but the foundation needs to be solid.

It wasn't as good as I thought it would be, mainly because of it being a rushed timeline to a point that i was thinking it was skipping, but other than that I thought it was a good film. Funny in parts. Good performances. Different. Good watch.

Old-fashioned family movie, reminiscent of something Disney may have produced in the 1970's. A little sappy at times, and it could have benefitted from a longer running time, but I enjoyed the film regardless.

I really enjoyed this movie. Interesting, fantastical premise, good love story, good acting, beautiful landscapes. A nice way to end an evening. I give it a 7 (good) out of 10.

I was pleasantly surprised by this film. Initially I felt that the start had rushed things and the whole journey of "we're going to Mars, oh she gave birth and died" was too quick, it seemed like it skipped 9 months of story but when I learned that the main focus of the film was the boy, it changed my mind slightly.

Looking past some scientific inaccuracies I'd definitely say this film is worth watching and if you're easily hit emotionally by films, you might need some tissues. I'm definitely glad I watched this film.

Personally I really loved this movie. There where parts that did seem rushed, the acting was good and I couldn't help but feel what the characters felt. I have no idea if this was just my depression making me overly emotional but I did get a little emotional at the end of the film.

The first act, albeit riddled with plot holes, was still endurable. The second and third act, however, got ridiculous and dumb.

2.5/10

Oh yeah, how did they get Gary freaking Oldman for this?

Absolute garbage. By the end of the movie my companion and I couldn't hold back our audible laughter in the theater regarding the awful and implausible storyline and scenes. I was more than disappointed to see that Gary Oldman couldn't even save this movie from its horrendous writing. The movie's "plot" plays out as though a group of middle school kids were simply shouting out "and what if this happened next," and all their comments were cobbled together in a failed attempt at making a salvageable film. This movie should only be viewed once (if) it hits basic cable and you can relish in the commercials as respite from the mind-numbing rubbish that the 121 minutes of this film offer.

Yes i didn't made a lot of sense but it was more than ok, i enjoyed it for a Sunday evening movie. I assume it appeals more to the 14 age kids out there

Holy shit was this painful to sit through. I felt every single minute as this went on. Like it was 4 hours long, but was only 2 hours. While not the worst thing I've seen this year, because there's much worst. However it will struggle to be remembered in the late future.

Asa Butterfield is getting worst in terms of picking movies and his acting. In this movie, he's very one note and I didn't buy the romance with Britt Robertson.

Gary Oldman is here for a pay check, but then again every actor gets paid, so it's not just him. Since it's Oldman, he is the best part of the film.

Imagine if Nicholas Sparks made a Sci-Fi story, just the worst kind.
