Another childhood favourite of many who’s internet acclaim by nostalgic millenials might even be more overblown than Raimi’s Spider-man. It’s an ok movie, but having no sense of nostalgia for the show myself, it’s hard to get a lot out of it. The absurdist humour and slapstick are primarily aimed at children, this clearly isn’t going for that Pixar balance. They throw a couple of bones towards adults (particularly the scenes involving King Neptune), but most of the comedy is pretty dumb and infantile. The plot’s alright, it’s not trying to reinvent the wheel and that’s fine. I’ve always really liked the design of the world and characters, but the technical execution is nothing special (especially compared to stuff Pixar and Ghibli were doing around this time, or Disney during its renaissance period). 5/10
