I love the myth of Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, and clearly the Chinese love him too, churning out a new film based on the myth practically every year. This is my favourite film adaptation I've seen so far, but this is in contrast to a lot of disappointments. Eddie Peng is charming as Sun Wukong and the story has several epic moments scattered in a convoluted plot burdened by an over-reliance on special effects and fantastic locations. It would have benefited from being more grounded and focused on developing its central plot. Overall, it has its moments but it still doesn't live up to my hopes when I went in to watch it.
