I have to agree with pdr: the main idea behind the movie only works if you have doubts yourself... the way it is presented definitely not!
When this first came up I dismissed the movie as a crappy hollywood slasher because it looked rather dumb. Only just recently I was made aware of the fact that it's the same director as the french movie Martyrs so I was intrigued. The whole marketing for this movie is so misleading it's not even funny. In my case it did it even more harm than good. It's not the worst movie I've seen but I expected better. Props for him trying such an off-kilter concept, unfortunately it was too underdeveloped.

Here I was, expecting some kind of slasher, horror or thriller movie (or maybe a combination of them all). Instead I got mind ***ked not just once, but twice.

This movie is not about someone mysterious trying to capture kids just to murder them for their pleasure.

It is about a group of people (not just Mr. and Mrs. Dennings) who lost faith in society and think that taking away children from their parents and giving them to rich people is the answer to problems the kids might not even see they have. Thinking about this movie has my mind question what I think of it, constantly. Is the ending in the movie bad? Maybe. No. Yes. No. I actually start wondering if the people making the movie are making a statement saying "it is better to be rich than to be poor" or that this is exactky the kind of statement they are critizing.

My problem with this movie is that it doesn't go deep enough. It cuts you a little, making you bleed mentally. But it doesn't get me anrgy or upset enough. I think this is because the way the statement is made, it is made quite safe. Although for once our hero isn't really a hero and defenitely is not going for a happy end. Emotionally you can question the so-called happy end of Jenny... She is supposed to be happy, but isn't completely.

All-in-all an interesting and good movie. Not such a bad movie some people here blame it to be.

People just don't get the idea of this film. It's not about stealing children from poor people and giving them to rich people who can raise the properly. It's about a person who did everything she could possibly do for making the world a little better, and seeing that it just doesn't work anymore.

The world, the politics, the economy is corrupted, and alone she couldn't change it. Is she guilty for taking the children from their parents? Yes, but no more than the abusive parents, who raised them in sh*tty cities, without any opportunities for healthy, intellectual growth.

Her mind slipped, and she gave in to "crime", but in her mind, she was giving them a better life (and indeed she did). The fact is, in the end of the movie I was confused. Do I blame her or not? And when the girl looked at the camera and asked me "Right?", I just couldn't answer it.

So, it's a very clever movie. But if you went looking for a slasher movie, you will hate it. But if you like movies at all, you will, at least, enjoy the central idea and the plot twists. Kudos to Pascal Laugier.

A good idea, but very poorly executed in the end.

The Tall Man was too big for its britches.

Like a getaway driver on a mountain road, it creates so many twists and turns that it loses the viewer.

The dark suspense thriller The Tall Man is an interesting and atmospheric film. The story follows a rash of kidnappings in a small mining town that spurs an urban legend of “The Tall Man;” a mysterious figure who abducts children. Jessica Biel leads the cast and gives a very strong performance. Additionally, the storytelling is well-done and is able to craft an intriguing mystery. Yet, the plot seems a little underdeveloped and the message of the film is a bit ambiguous. While the film doesn’t completely come together, The Tall Man still has enough mystery and suspense to tell a compelling tale.

Not what you'd expect and that a good thing. It's hard to say anything else than that without spoiling the movie. Definitely a good watch.

Why is this movie good? Well, in my opinion, because it is unique. I was thinking about the story long time after I watched it...about moral aspects, and how they were presented in the movie. Questions like - Is it wrong to do a bad thing for the greater good?? Is it allowed to interfere with other people fates and lives? So, if you dismiss bad things in the movie (yes, the main detective is stupid, yes Jessica Biel is a f....ing terminator :D...yes there are some questions unanswered...), if you put all that on one side, you get some interesting story and theory about hard subject such as children who disappear. 7/10
