The TAMING OF THE SHREW is an uncomfortable play for the 21st Century. A woman cowed by abuse and mistreatment until she bows to her husband's insensible whims. The Canadian Stratford Festival Company chose to play it as over the top farce but still the violent reality of the subjugation of woman, present and past, made it too difficult for me reconcile the message with the medium. Does The TAMING OF THE SHREW have anything to say for a modern audience? If it does it needs a treatment that grapples with the social implications of the subject matter. This production did not. I can only give it a 4 (uncomfortable) out of 10. (Shakespearean Stage Play Filmed]
