Like a huge dump after an Easter dinner of cheese, crackers & salami as an appetizer, then a huge slab of prime rib, potato cakes, and shredded asiago on broccoli, Brussel sprouts & green beans, with chocolate chip cookies for dessert: The Ten Commandments is a lot to get through but is ultimately rewarding and makes you feel better (if a little worn out) when it's over.

The Ten Commandments is a classic for good reason. The (award winning) special effects are especially impressive for 1956 and the pacing of a work with such scope is surprisingly balanced.

The performances, on the other hand, are pre-'method' so feel overly dramatic but the all-star cast (including Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner, but also acting anachronisms Edward G. Robinson and Vincent Office as ancient Egyptians, and even has future Lily Munster Yvonne De Carlo) is fun to watch, even if that fun comes from 'laughable' at times.

The Ten Commandments' black & white storyline can't hold a candle to other classics like Gone with the Wind (1939!), but provides pure entertainment that's a lot to bite off but easy to digest.

The greatest Biblical epic ever made, Cecil B. DeMille’s The Ten Commandments is a masterpiece. The story follows Moses, a prince of Egypt who discovers his secret Hebrew heritage and finds that he can no longer turn a blind eye to the suffering of his people under Pharaoh. The cast is amazing, and features Charlton Heston, Yul Brynner, Anne Baxter, and Edward G. Robinson in unforgettable performances. Heston in particular gives an iconic performance (as if he was born to play Moses). And, the set designs and costumes are especially ambitious, done on a remarkable scale with exceptional detail. The score is also magnificent, with grand, sweeping orchestral themes. Additionally, DeMille brings an interesting perspective to the material; framing it as a struggle between freedom and tyranny. The Ten Commandments is an extraordinary piece of filmmaking and a beloved classic. “So let it be written, so let it be done.”

A spectacular film that has stood the test of time all thanks to Cecile B Demille. This is what MGM excelled at.... an extravaganza! The parting of the Red Sea says it all.

Given that this movie was made in 1956 the production quality is amazing. Featuring some of the biggest names in old Hollywood and a marathon runtime of nearly 4 hours, this is an epic movie. I have nothing but respect for the creators and the artists of The Ten Commandments.
