This was in its time a good movie with great special effects, today it’s dated

In the blockbuster disaster genre, this is a dated classic - and is by far the best of the suite of such movies that appeared in the early to mid 1970s. Commercial movie making didn't get better than this until Star Wars appeared in 1977. An Irwin Allen gem!

50 years ago, I can remember the excitement of people watching this in a movie theatre, in a time before special effects and CGI, when there were some really big movie stars (Steve McQueen, but also O J Simpson is here), and movies like this were "an event" so (almost) 3 hours made it even more special

But those times are gone, the period of epic disaster movies is over, and the world has changed

My advice would be to skip this unless you are an enthusiast of the period of genre
My biggest complaint with this movie is when they tie themselves down. All of them end up, getting up like there wasn't even a rope there.
The late Paul Newman still looked incredibly sexy at his age at the time. I don't like all of his movies, but I think he did a phenomenal job in this one. The special effects and cinematic angles were superb for it's time in my opinion. This was almost like watching "The Poseidon," but instead of a boat, it was a building. Although it had a sad ending, I think it's worth watching in HD, just for it's cinematic properties. Very well done in my opinion.

after the tower, I see this seventies catastophonic blockbuster again, with great actors and good fire scenes
"Move the party to the ground floor, there is a fire
I don't move the party by a small fire
I must have moved the party to the ground floor "

I tend to like disaster movies, and The Towering Inferno is no exception. It's as cheesy and bloated as they come, but it has its own kind of charm.

Most of the actors do good work on this one, but none that really stand out. It might just be my imagination, but the two egos of Newman and McQueen seem to clash a little.

The effects are good for the time, but that's just as it should be as this movie had to be hellishly expensive...

Anyway...if you can stand a cheesy, bloated, and a bit claustrophobic (almost) 3 hours of flaming explosions...this is the movie for you.

Fantastic. Another great ensemble. I change my mind, it holds up slightly better than Poseidon, but thanks mostly to the chemistry between Newman and McQueen. A little long, but it doesn't feel like it.
