A dark, chilling and relentlessly bleak psychological crime thriller. Perhaps runs a bit too long which makes this an incredibly exhausting and uncomfortable watch, and I’m not so sure if the outcome is rewarding enough. That said, the journey to get to that point is extremely thrilling. The performances, score, cinematography all come together incredibly well to convey a sense of unease. It's really slow and confusing at first but after it picks up the foreboding and unease never stop growing. Two leads' performances are incredibly good, lifting this film immensely. But the standout aspect is definitely the score and sound design which never fail at keeping you on edge. This film might not appeal to everyone but if you like slow burns, this is worth checking out.

The pay off isn't bad at all, but the build up to it is just so so soooo slow and boring.

This movie based on a real life incident is very well crafted. It is certainly bleak and perhaps humdrum in parts but is actually more reflective of the realness of the subject matter and the lengths to which a dedicated team of police went to solve a crime. Of you enjoy candyfloss with love interests and car chases, this may not be for you, and certainly it appears the American market does not appreciate subtlety, but I would heartily recommend this to fan of true crime programming. The acting is damn good and the editing is just right. This was a real life nightmare for a family and this film is respectful of that. Phew.

Not my type of film, neither the true crime, the undercover cops thriller nor the manly men that speak two raspy words an hour tops... But it held me in a vice grip after the intro to the end, so while I find the movie a 7, I'll give it a +1 for that achievement

I didn’t like it. It is slow and confusing and finally I did get what is all about. And the music is so full and out of sync. This music director has to be fired. Good acting.

Occasionally confusing due to the way the narrative plays out. But this is still a gripping film with standout performances from Edgerton and Harris. Highly recommended.

Long drawn out story that goes as fast as peanut butter moving up hill in the winter. We got to 39 minutes and couldn't take it anymore, it was just too painfully boring.

A very slow and dark crime thriller with great acting from the two leads and a compelling story. It's very quiet most of the time and the pacing is on sloth mode which makes it easy to lose interest or doze off. It's not very captivating because of that but we get some very loud noises once in a while, almost like jumpscares. Amidst all that quietness is a very loud story based on true events about missing kids and a kidnapper on the loose. Our main character, a single father, must find the right evidence to arrest that kidnapper. The relationship between the two was truly special and by far the best thing about the movie. The Mark as a father storyline was touching and I wanted a bit more of it.
I didn't feel like the confession was earned or that the confessor was in the right mind set to actually confess but then again minds like that don't function normally I guess. Also I felt a little unsatisfied with the ending maybe I was looking for more reactions from the character.
[Netflix] The director's work through staging, sound and disturbing visuals creates an atmosphere that works as a psychological representation of the characters. The narrative is sustained by the transformation of our point of view regarding Henry, and the disturbing contrast between the scenes of Mark as a father and the suffocating criminal world in which he develops his work.

Good understated performances here. Grim subject matter w a well told story. That said it can be very very slow in parts. It does have a strong lingering effect on the viewer and that's due to the true nature of the story and the way it was conveyed. Worth viewing, but don't expect to be happy watching it. 6.4

Bleak. But with some moments where you started to feel... something... for characters you know are wrecked, broken, horrible individuals. Edgerton is nominally the protagonist, who you'll struggle to connect with, while Harris is a monster that you don't want to see as human, but will have conflicted feelings about. In a slow developing and sometimes confusingly time-hoppy story, I was pulled into this search for truth, closure, and punishment. I felt awful by the end, but in a way that you should after watching something of this nature.
